Rheumatology apt. next week but have already decided I'm not going to have an infusion or any Bisphosphonates. I tried Risedronate and it gave me terrible side effects which I'm probably still suffering from. No more horrible drugs for me but I'm carrying on with the exercise, good diet, low carb and lots of fresh veg. I encourage you all to do the weight bearing and resistance exercise starting with whatever small movements you can do. Eat the healthiest diet you can and look after your mind too. Enjoy life, do things you enjoy and make the most of every day.

Good luck and good luck with your rheumy appt, lets us know how you got on. I am dong everything the same as you, but still on Risadronate, and hoping that I can find where I can get the other bone density scan (that someone mentioned on here) sometime later on in the year.

Good luck, since I had a bad reaction to zolendronic acid infusion in 2019 Rheumatology hasn't even sent me appt...!!

in reply toCharlie50

May I ask what bad reaction did you have Charlie50? I completed 3 years of Zolendronic infusions just before Christmas 2019, with very few problems. I'm on a drugs holiday now.

Ended up in hospital on drips & intravenous antibiotics, vomitting, servre joint pain, unable to eat or drink, bloods not good, then got a bacteria infection so was advised not to do another transfusion..... when I was discharged ended up with 2 fillings because teeth cracked for no reason & had only got my dental check up previous week. I M glad to know that for some it works though.....

I have an appointment for the infusion at the end of the month but I have phoned up to cancel it. Just don’t want to go down that path so trying with diet and supplements and as much exercise as I can tho I am still recovering from a broken ankle, I manage tai chi and walking. I want to just get on with the rest of my life and enjoy it.

I went to the gym with leg and ankle in cast. Never been to a gym before but started working out then and there. Starting light. It was so hard using crutches, I realised I had to get fit!

Have you thought about asking for a second opinion? I was on diferent drugs, but eventually, with a lot of oposition, got a second opinion from an eminent professor, and things seem to be improving. If you live in the UK we seem reluctant to go for another opinion, but in the States it seems normal - possibly one reason why their healthcare costsmore?

Totally agree.

Some medications one has to take, like in the case of cancer and other life threatening conditions, regardless of the side effects.

But otherwise, healthy living and a positive attitude is the best prescription.

Sometimes life throws us a curve ball, so that elusive 'positive attitude' thingy is a bit hard to come by.

All we can do is grin and bear it (talking to myself again....), things Will get better.

Wishing you all the best Nanaedake

Sometimes I agree it's hard to feel or be positive. In those times I just try to do one thing each day or see one thing each day I can enjoy even if it's fleeting. Might be sun tinged clouds on the horizon or trying out a new recipe or eating a new fruit. A short walk. Crocheting a few squares or planning a craft project to do at home.

Hi. I’m not due my second Dexa scan until next year but can’t wait to see if all the walking and prunes etc. have made a difference because I really don’t ever want to take any of the drugs offered.

I’m hoping that everything goes really well for you!

Fran 😉

in reply toFran57

Prunes? Are they good for bones?

Nanaedake profile image
Nanaedake in reply to

They contain boron, good for bones.

Fran57 profile image

Apparently so... they contain boron.

I hope they have been worth it , since I really don’t like the taste!

Buy boron supplements then. 3mg a day - capsules, much easier than prunes!!

Thanks- I’ll look into that 😉

Hi,

Wishing you all the best with your rheumatology appointment. I have just seen rheumatologist and after much discussion I have decided to go ahead with zolendronic acid infusion.a

I too have a good diet and do all I can to keep healthy including walking as much as possible but am going to give the infusion a go as I hate the thought of getting a further compression fracture.

Good luck and best wishes

Hi Cook1703

I too have a zolendronic infusion in 3 weeks, I had a fall last March and fractured my ankle and humerus they still haven’t healed, that’s when I was diagnosed with osteoporosis I’ve tried the bone meds but the side effects where awful so not looking forward to the infusion but desperate measures and all that.

Good luck with your.

in reply toROSmember

Hi ROSmember,

I have been given 6th February for my infusion. I am still feeling apprehensive but trying to be positive. I see you having your infusion in a few weeks. I am hoping to keep some sort of record. They said as it is my first one, the infusion will take an hour. Sending you best wishes.

ROSmember profile image
ROSmember in reply to

Keeping records is a good idea, I shall do that too.

My infusion is the 14th February so it’s you first, good luck and stay in touch we may have different side effects or non at all 🤞🤞

in reply toROSmember

I will keep in touch and let you how how it goes.

Best wishes

Have to figure that one out. This year I'm making 5 or 6 salads with lots of veg and fruit. In fridge so I always have a healthy meal or snack through my busy week. Gluten free, low carb and smaller amount of meat. Probiotic or fermented food at every meal. That's my plan. Nutrient rich, low carb, high in good fats.

Not advocating it for others, it's just the way I want to go.

Thank you, and will do. I am apprehensive but all I can do is hope it is the right decision.

More research is coming out all the time, hopefully better treatments will be available soon. Then we won't feel we're playing Russian roulette!

I'm not cutting out meat, fish or dairy, just eating less and not eating it daily. I've increased the quantity and variety of veg, fruit, pulses instead. I'm less tempted to eat junk as there is always a tasty salad in the fridge.

I am so interested to read your post because I am at the same crossroads and would like to finish Alendronic Acid, but I am still on 2mg Pred. My heart tells me to cope myself through nutrition, exercise/weight bearing as you describe. My rheumatologist just advised continue with my meds, have another DEXA in 2/3 years. I've been on the meds for 5 yrs for PMR, and now diagnosed with Osteoporosis. I'm seeing GP tomorrow but suspect she will side with rheumatologist. Good for you being pro active. I wish you all the best luck and good health.

I'm now being scheduled for another DEXA scan so I'll be interested to know the outcome and if I'm going in the right direction.
