I am so grateful. Just to confirm that I am correct that I would not need to go on to any other meds to transition off ? Just calcium d diet exercise etx
From all the reading on here over the years you should be fine. Vitamin K2 is the most important in my opinion as it directs the calcium into the bones. In your blood tests you can check your vitamin D which is also very important. Have a really good diet of bone broth, leafy greens, fish especially salmon, yoghurt, a few prunes, and lots of fruit and vegetables. Do weight bearing exercise if you’re able like walking. Just be as healthy as you can. Some magnesium is a good idea too. All the best.
Thank you for your guidance . My calcium and Vit d levels are good . I note the K2 comment I try exercises every day and have done for the last 20 years
Issue is that hyperthyroidism has leeched calcium and that is being addressed. Weaning off meds
Logic would prevail by saying that once this is resolved- I should be able to build with healthy diet and exercise etx
Do you know your tscores? If borderline like -2.5 or so then more doable from others on here. If there’s a big discrepancy between hips and back then the results aren’t very reliable. Our bones are our bones and should be similar.
They gave you prolia with those results! You most certainly can improve on those as they’re not bad at all. It’s harder when you’re well into osteoporosis range but you’re not. People have reported turning that around with similar numbers. You just need to slow it into the future.
I suggest going direct to the prolia website and read the 'Important Safety Information' and you can read section 5.6 of the Prescribing Information (link also on the Prolia page), that is a section on discontinuing Prolia. After all that, with the info you have got from the website, then talk to your doctor and/or specialist. Good luck.
Your guidance is appreciated. Independent research indicates that after one injection - the risk of fracture is minimal. The prolia information refers to 2 or more I think
But I am unsure of this and will continue looking for side effects atopping after One Shot
Hi. I really do recommend you read the prescriber's info because it's the real info given to doctors. Please don't stop on your own - ask to get a second opinion on top of the view of your GP is better than trying to figure out the stats on your own.
I had another vertebral fracture 18 months after my one Prolia injection, but noone can say what caused it. I have had several vertebral fractures and a DEXA score much worse than yours!
Hi! I have a little more advanced t scores than you & I was surprised my doc immediately put me on PROLIA when other options were available
I’m very surprised you were given PROLIA with your scores. I’m sorry you were.
I’m currently going to my 1st Endo for my hypothyroidism (thx for your input on that!!) and I am hoping she will wean me off PROLIA by giving me a BISPHOSPHONATE (spelling?) 3 months after last PROLIA injection. My new Endo will also manage my thyroid issues (I’d love to get off meds like you if possible!)
During Covid, I had already had one PROLIA injection, then missed an injection at my 6 month time. (Wished I hadn’t, but I continued PROLIA injections 🙄.) Yes my bones did decrease after the skipped injection in all 3 areas… but I joined OsteoStrong and I am hoping to regain some of those losses. I’m getting my calcium from food and restarted weight training.
What I really wanted to share with you though…
My neighbor friend is 90, has severe OP and been on PROLIA for 4 years. She unfortunately fell recently and broke 2 bones-it was quite serious. She’s in Rehab now doing amazingly well!🙏 Her PT technician says it is her lifelong exercising that is certainly the reason she’s surpassed all expectations! So wonderful that you have been exercising for 20 years!! WTG!
I went off of Prolia because my last DEXA showed that I my bone density had declined. Prolia worked well for me, but I’m one of those unusual osteoporosis cases, when the cause of my illness is unknown.
As a result, I elected to stop using Prolia and switch to Evenity to help build bone.
Obviously, I won’t if Evenity is working until my next DEXA (March 2024) and my quarterly lab results.
The best exercise for rebuilding bone is Resistance Training and then would be what is known as Jump training. As with all these things, depending upon your dexa scores plus previous experience of exercise etc will dictate what you do. The attached study was conducted to see what helped the group pf subjects, moderately active men with osteopenia (so T score less than -2.5) and between 25-60 over 12 months. Two different group one doing RT, one doing Jump. I have spinal numbers at -3.1 and hip -2.4 and have been doing the RT and Jump for a month. I am generally active, however was not doing much weight bearing exercise, until my scores one month ago were not improved from my scores of 2 years ago. I was also not supplementing sufficiently, nor getting enough fruit and veg. For context I had been on a restricted diet between 2007-2017 for what I thought were food intolerances, however it was due to a parasite. I dont have any pathology causing my osteo ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl...
I had one injection and had side effects so decided to stop. I did not have any other medication and 3 years on I’ve had no rebound fractures. I did subsequently find out I had hyperparathyroidism and after a parathyroidectomy am hopeful that my bone density will improve. If you haven’t had blood tests for calcium and parathyroid done I would urge you to do so. Good luck.
I am beginning to wonder if this whole Ptolia thing is a big scam. Do doctors make a profit on purchasing Prolia and doing injections from their office?????
