Rebound fractures after Prolia.

Has anyone on here had 7 vertebral fractures or more after discontinuing Prolia. If so did they stop after a year. I’ve had 7 and have had no new ones in last three months. I’m taking K2-7, chewable calcium, 1600 of D, and a multi everyday. I start PT today to rebuild my muscle strength which I’ve lost due to inactivity due to pain over the last year.

My thoracic vertebrae fractures started 6 yrs ago. Prolia injections started 4 yrs ago and the side effects worsened so I skipped a dosage after 2 years. Then my T-6 to T12 fractured like dominoes within a month. Surgery “kyphoplasty” was able to repair 3 of the 6 fractures and now 2 years after procedure, PT, supplements and food as medicine I still take Prolia. No new fractures for 2 years but think Prolia is a life sentence for me, never want to be totally disabled as I was with the missed dosage

Please clarify “skipped a dose”. Does that mean you regularly had your every six months injection and then did not have another for a whole year.

I have read government reports that fractures can start about a few months after the missed injection. Prolia leaves the body at six months, leaving you vulnerable to fractures.

People have reported successful dental procedures done about four months after last injection but then resuming their regular one on time of BUT they did resume. Stopping completely one must be started on some other osteo med.

“Skipped dose in April, suffered compression fractures, August, Sept and Oct. within four months after last injection. I rapidly got October dose and every six months for fracture free3 yrs so far.

Your Doctor should have put you on a bone med if he or she knew you were planning on skipping. Prolia cannot be stopped without doing so.

Hi Fracture Girl

I am in the US. I experienced 6 vertebrae fractures after missing one dose of Prolia. Doctors did not start back with Prolia as successfve density scans over 6 year period did seem to indicate that Prolia was not working that well. My doctor did not think that I would be wise to refrain from medication so he started me on Reclast this week. At this time I am simply trying to prevent additional damage. The fractures left me with a condition similar to "bent back syndrome". I can no longer stand erect and have very limited mobility.

My fractures were four lumbar and the three lowest Thoracic so I can sit erect but standing erect no. I start PT next week. I walk three times a week for 30 min at the grocery holding on to the cart. Baby steps. My fractures spread over 10 months so the last bunch were 14 weeks ago.

Thank you, HeronNS! I have been saying this for years. ALL of these bone meds need to be removed from the markets! They do not build good bone, hence fractures. I have placed the article on my Facebook page to warn my friends.

Was your Doctor aware that you were missing a dose of Prolia?

After having 3 injections and then complications from Prolia, I stopped taking it and did not add anything on right away (this is before they gave the warnings you must start something), my Doctor and PT can't even tell me how many fractures I ended up with in my lower spine. I did find relief from the severe pain eventually with PT, strengthen exercises and time. I hope the same for you. Good luck

I start PT next week. Fingers crossed.

I returned to my doctor this week regarding Fosavance and he told me none of the meds actually prevent fractures, if you are to get them you will get them He said walking and increasing dairy was a good way to help bones. I have changed to the monthly tablet to see how I get on and also he added in extra strong Calcichew.

If you have a normal healthy stomach use Citracal. It’s much better absorbed than any other formulation. I have bad GERD and can not tolerate the citric acid in it.

Remember to take Vitamin K2 (not K1). It will direct calcium to the bones.

I am taking K-2, isoflvone, calcium and D.

Hi Fracturegirl. Do you also take Mg? It’s required along with D3 and K2 to aid the absorption and utilisation of Ca.

I find Mg bisglycinate doesn’t upset my guts, unlike the Mg oxide.

Good luck with the PT.

I do take magnesium. Been taking that with the calcium for the last 18 years.

Sorry to hear your news. I am trying to find others in the UK 'in the same boat' - I feel I got caught in the in between period when the manufactures advice on having cover with an alterative medication was not fully taken on board in the UK.

Having stop medication Prolia in June 2017 I then had mild back pain in October culminating in waking one night unable to move and in horrid pain. Cut a long story short I asked to have one more injection in the December of 2017 just to ‘cover me’ until it could be worked out what the problem was. I had an x-ray and blood test nothing showed up, had a second set of x-rays and a scan in February 2018 showed fracture damage aged 3-4 months previous. It does seem to me dependent on who is looking at the information as to how many fractures they spot! However it would seem at least five vertebra and six hairlines fractures. I was referred to spinal surgeon, I waited 6 months for an appointment a few days ago only to be told that the damage is too great extensive for surgery of any nature. I need to review and reappraise my situation; it is now a life changer! From being very active and working full time to being unable to walk without aids even in the house and no work.

I started Foresteo injections in June 2018, I believe it will be for two years. I found Prolia suited me bone density measurements moved me out of the Osteoporosis brackets. I do not intend to go on any holiday from medication again not after this, so I hope the one bad lot of fractures are going to be the only ones!

Does it take six months to get an appt. Is that what is called single payer insurance in the UK? Not familiar with your medical plans.

I live in the UK where the NHS is free and a great service .... with occassional blips, I don't live in an area with a large hospital so needed to be referred on. I understand my papers went from one Consultant to the next to the next, all came to the same conclusion, no surgery would be suitable.

Hope you are making as good a recovery as possible.

I have had 6 vertebral fractures plus sternum and rib after stopping prolia

Had you completely skipped a dose and never went back?

How soon after that missed dose did youfracture? Would appreciate knowing as a surgeon did an implant on a patient successfully four months after his previous dose BUT he went back to his regular schedule after dental done.

Then again, someone here reported fractures at that four month delay.

Update on my fractures. Amgen says that the rebound fractures only last 12 months past the discontinuation of Prolia injections. I thought and hoped that mine were over with the fracture last May 2018. Alas, I had another refracture of L1 on October 1, 2018. Then I went to read the official propaganda by Amgen. They have now extended the risk period to 18 months. Well yes that would be correct. I sure hope they take this life ruining horrible medication off of the market soon.
