My mother is 86 and has fairly severe osteoporosis with fractures in the spine. She has lost 4 inches in height. Her doctors want her to start prolia. she is prone to severe reactions to medications and has lupus. Does anyone out there have experience with this drug?

Sorry, I cannot help as my OP doctor offered me Prolia and I decided not to take it. My reason being because I suffer joint pain daily due to osteoarthritis and am not prepared to take the risk of more bone pain as this is one of the possible side effects. The OP doctor was fine with my decision and then added that on discontinuing with Prolia rebound vertebral fractures can occur so it is recommended to continue on another OP drug.
Hi and thank you for reply - I wanted to clarify- were you advised that if you start prolia then stop it for whatever reason, you would be at risk for vertebral fractures. Is that something to do with the body's reaction to stopping the drug? Years ago mom tried fosimax and could not tolerate it.
My op doctor told me that discontinuing Prolia after three years rebound vertebral fractures can occur so it is recommended to continue on another OP drug. Perhaps one can take Prolia for longer than three years but I understood one cannot have a "drug holiday" from Prolia , without continuing on another OP drug. hey.nhs.uk/wp/wp-content/up... If you start Prolia for 6/12 months I do not know if the sameapplies.
Why not call the NOS helpline and speak with a nurse.
