Hi everyone

I take lercanidipine and candesartan for high blood pressure and its normally quite high

I weaned myself off omeprazole for reflux as longterm is not good

but doc has said guidelines now are to be on it if you take aspirin 75 mgs daily.

Ive just been reading though that PPIs can cause hypertension . So I really want to stay off omeprazole Does anyone have any experience of this ?

Thanks so much

my husband has been on a PPI ever since they came on the market, about 20 or 25 years. He’s never had high blood pressure, though because of an angina attack he takes BP medication.

Anyone on aspirin risks tummy troubles and that’s why your doc says you should have a PPI. You have to balance one thing against another.

The best person to talk this through with you would be the pharmacist employed by your doctors group of surgeries, failing that your dispensing pharmacist.

I’m a bit puzzled when you say that taking a PPI long term isnt good. What makes you say this?

Thanks Happyrosie

the reason is, according to my gp , they can reduce vitamin b absorption and not recommended long term if you have osteoporosis as can make fractures more likely. So Im hoping Gaviscon Advance will do the trick !

But of course if they do increase blood pressure

, yet another reason which is why I'm wondering .

That's correct about Osteoporosis risk. I was told by gastro enterologist to come off them immediately. Also advised there is a dementia risk same for H2 blockers. Very difficult situation as not much available in the way of alternatives. Let us know how you get on. Good luck !

I believe your pharmacist would be able to talk you through all the pros and cons. The one employed at your surgery would have access to your notes

I dont know much about this however, my reflux is not great at all - as long as I watch whatIeat. . After starting on 30mg for 3 months to get some kind of control I've taken just 10mg of omeprazole for the past year. I'm glad because I'm sure that the benefits of taking such a small dose out weighs other risk. I've had osteopenia since before 2003 and take lung medicines plus plenty of vitamins and minerals to keep immunity strong/help prevent lung infections. I take the omeprazole 10mg about 5am in the hope it won't be such a barrier to everything else I take about lunchtime after food. Taking Ramiplril at bedtime along with statin & lung meds.
