I have this exact same problem. I have needed a catheter whenever I have anesthesia (including for a hip replacement). The anesthesia may be causing the problem. I also think, at least in my case, there is a strong mental component. I can get anxious I will not be able to go, and this makes it difficult to relax enough to actually go. In my case, I remove the catheter in the morning and know that I have a urologist appt. in the afternoon, in case there is any problem. Usually, about 10 days or so after anesthesia I am able to pee on my own when the catheter is out.
Thank you for your reply I am also a very anxious lady I have waited 9 years for this hip and had Avascular necrosis I had the operation on 16 October and still hadn’t managed to poop 8 days later ( I do normally only go every 2 weeks as been on high doses of morphine for 9 years then 9 days later for 3 days nurse diffident an enema and tried to do manual evacuation for 3 days I was screaming each day and it was not working anyway then when I saw my consultant he said “ we do not do that anymore you could rupture the patient they then had to start loading with the Royal free hospital as they did not know what to do
I am in The Royal Orthpaedic hospital in Stanmore and they do not have any general surgeons then I started to retain 800 ml urine so catheters now being put in and out also pulled onto floor in middle of night by health assistant as she said I was messing the bed by then and hurt operated leg so yes my anxiety is bad I don’t know what to do
Have things improved? Have you been able to pee on your own and has the catheter(s) been removed. I have been thinking about you and hoping for improvement.
Thank you for your kind words
Hospital spent 3 days clamping catheter each times was 400 to 800 urine built up was so painful
I then asked them to take it out completely to see if that would work
I persevered and eventually yesterday I managed to wee
What a relief I just did not want to go home with a catheter and what other problems it would bring
Constipation has started to build up again so hope that doesn’t get as bad taking DUCOSATE LACTILOSE
Fibogel and prune juice it was prune juice that helped the most
I got discharged very late last night
After being there 18 days should have only been 6 told
Anyways told caters and district nurse would come this morning as yet nobody or even a phone call so don’t know what’s. Happened
Have to wait and see
Also problem could not supply my medication
I’ve just been so down these past few days
Sorry for moans
I understand being down; having problems peeing and with BMs, let alone the actual surgery, is very upsetting. It sounds like things are starting to improve though and I think after another month or so passes you will start to get back to normal mentally and not so down. x
