Did anyone's withdrawal symptoms coming off bisoprolol get worse as time went on?I was on it for erratic BP. I weaned off bisoprolol 6 months ago. The only withdrawal symptom I really have is anxiety: jittery, nervousness, edginess. The first few months, the anxiety wasn't bad, very sporadic. But after that, the anxiety just seemed to slowly ramp up. And the last month, it has been horrific and I have no clue why. I'm not on any new meds that would cause this.
Also: I've never suffered from anxiety my whole life. The anxiety started after I went on bisoprolol and slowly got worse the longer I was on it so I told the doctor I wanted off (I was on it for 2 years at 5 mg).
Did anyone's withdrawal symptoms get worse the longer you were off it? And if so, did it slowly get better?
They say that beta blockers don't permanently alter your central nervous system. I'm starting to REALLY doubt that statement!

I would warn people about coming off bp medications. Need to know the proper weaning precautions. I stopped cold not knowing otherwise , and lost eye sight (diplopia, ptosis) that resulted in hospitalization. Okay now, but took months to regain vision. Now I do not stop any drug without understanding how to come off of it.
Hi there, thanks for posting...you seem to be having alot of problems using this type of medication 💊 unfortunately beater blockers are not everyone's cupper T..I had problems myself especially taking propranolol and Bisoprolol, I too had increased Anxiety after these type of medication was stopped I was only on a low dose for both of them, but I still had problems taking them, propranolol low bp and fast heart rate came on, Bisoprolol slow heart rate, Increased Anxiety nearly on a daily basis 😢 since been off this type of medication 💊 iam still experiencing slow heart rate, when resting 49bpm to 55bpm. When sleeping 47bpm.
I gave it a half hearted go at stopping , consultant said I could. Only in 1.25mg.. I didn’t like myself after a couple of weeks of stopping, didn’t feel right , felt my heart thumping in my chest , I’d never suffered from anxiety .. but had a funny feeling that I put down to a bit of anxiety. I thought I was better off on the small dose. Feel much better. Enjoying my running and swimming, can get my heart rate over 150s when working and at rest in mid 40s.
Try chamomile tea. It may help with the anxiety. Getting off betablockers takes years for the body to get back to normal because the body has adjusted to the drug so the body needs a lot of time to reset itself.
Interesting you said that. I was on atenolol for about four years then the NICE advice changed as I turned sixty. I changed to the recommended doses of Lisonopril and Lacidipine and didn’t wean off atenolol, just stopped. The only thing I noticed was that, as I’d got used to a slow heart rate, when I exercised and my pulse was 140ish I noticed the much higher rate. Got used to that in a couple of weeks.
Did you just stop taking or did your GP or consultant advise you. From my understanding just stopping any kind of medication cold turkey is not advisable unless advised from a professional. You usually taper off.🤗
I never suffered from any type of anxiety before I started bisoprolol. After I started it, that's when the low grade anxiety started and got worse when I weaned off. So I'm pretty sure that is the cause. I just need to find a doctor to help me figure out what I need to do to get my system back to before I started bisoprolol. Take care!
That's a worry, I started on them just 6 days ago as I have Afib according the the hospital doctor, also gave me blood thinners and said have to take for the rest of my life. Not happy to be taking any of them as already take thyroxine and blood pressure tablets. Hope you feel better soon and the Bisopropol should not be doing this to you now but maybe takes a while to get out of the system. Good luck
I was put on bisporolol for an occasional flutter that I never even noticed. 2.5mg, been on it for 18 months and it makes me feel ill with all the usual side effects you will see online. I am trying to come off it and the palpitations, AF and nausea etc are unbelievable. My strong advice to you is do not take it! I would personally rather take the medical risks than lose my life to this awful drug.
Unfortunately, I was already on it from October 2022 - August 2024. First at 5 mg, then 2.5 the last month. If someone needs a beta blocker, I would advise them to choose another one.
I came off of it in August 2024. And 6 months later, I'm still dealing with extreme anxiety that I've never experienced in my life! I'm starting to wonder if my peripheral nervous system and central nervous system will ever go back to pre October 2022!!
I feel extremely depressed and defeated.
I hope you have a much better and quicker time dealing with the withdrawal effects!
That's sad to hear. I will get off it if it kills me and it might just do that the way I feel at the moment. How on earth is this drug still being allowed to be prescribed with all the negative feedback? I am just so disappointed in myself that I never checked up on it before I started taking it.
I feel the same way. I was put on it for an erractic BP. I wish I would have looked up this drug more, and said unless my BP becomes dangerously high, no thank you!
I hope you feel better soon , I replied to Dogmom419 about my experience. Have refused to take it after the side effects. Waiting to see what my Echo scan shows next week. Good luck. Cate
I have only been on Bisopropol for three weeks, horrible drug and am sure some people will say it's ok for them and that's fine if it is. I went to my doctor yesterday and said I refuse to take it, I had an abnormal heart rhythm three weeks ago and was told it's AFib, they gave me blood thinners and 2.5 Bisopropol. I think the final straw came when pains in legs, swollen legs and ankles kicked it and could hardly get up. So he's contacted hospital to see if there is another beta blocker that is better. I am not happy taking any, but he pointed out the benefits of the drug. I pointed out it's no way to live with the side effects. I hope you get some help. Cate
I'm sorry to hear the side effects you are enduring on bisoprolol. If people need to be on a beta blocker, I would definitely recommend going on any one besides bisoprolol. My husband has been on propranolol for over 25 years and has had really no problems on it.
So if your doctor recommends that you need to be on a beta blocker, research the ones out there and discuss them with him. I guarantee ANY of them will be better than bisoprolol.
Many thanks will look at that one, am waiting to hear from doctor which one the cardiologist suggest but not Bisopropol. Thank you so much for your help. Take care. Cate.
