bisoprolol and vitamins

hello all,

I feel really weak, I understand it may be because my blood is slightly low from the use of blood-thinners. What supplements do everyone take. They tell me to get more active but can’t as I’ve explained 🤷‍♀️please help!

I’ve established eating potassium with bisoprolol is not a good Idea 🤷‍♀️

You really need to speak to your GP as some supplements are contra-indicated because of BP/blood thinning/etc. medication. I am prescibed Vitamin D and my GP is happy with me adding Vitamin C. After my amputation I was prescribed iron tablets but moved over to obtaining it from my diet as that avoids the unpleasant side effects that need YAD (Yet Another Drug), Senna!

If you are on a PPI, like Omeprazole or Lansoprazole, do not take supplements at the same time as their absorption could be impacted. A balanced diet is important as well and as you feel weak best avoid alcohol.

Thank you, for replying. I stopped drinking alcohol. I was on lanzopazole but can’t take it as it gives me constipation. I’m all over the place. Doc says one thing and cardiology say another.

As this has to do with your heart and the cardiologist is more knowledgeable on the subject, defer to him/her. And advise GP you are doing so.

Apologies i don’t have a cardiologist, I have a rhythm nurse who rushed me out of the rooms. What I am saying is I’m in limbo.

Probably because a rhythm nurse is not and never will be a cardiologist. They know what medications and contraindications like alcohol etc can do but lack the skill of a cardiologist when it comes to the big picture like who should take these meds, who should not, side effects etc. Basically they are the assistant to the cardiologist and rarely the go between, I know from experience believe me.

I can't see how blood thinners would make you weak,it doesn't affect the blood it helps stop clots forming to avoid strokes

it’s because it makes my menstruation really heavy so my blood count goes lower- sorry for the details

You sound at risk of iron deficiency or anaemia.

GPs will generally order an FBC, and that will give Haemoglobin. Low Hb indicates anaemia, but for it to get to that stage you have to have been iron or folate deficient for some time.

Ask for an iron status test to get your serum iron and transferrin saturation. If either of these are low/bottom half of range, you will feel fatigue and muscle weakness. Good idea to check VitD, folate and B12 too. If your GP is not accommodating then online companies like Medichecks will do it for a fee and their own Doctors will review and report.

"Within range" does not mean optimum, even though GPs will simply report "normal" it's worth you checking your results and looking at where they fall in the lab reference range.

That's how I ended up working out why I was so tired, had restless legs and weakness. PPIs are notorious for causing malabsorption. Even though I was taking iron supplements at the opposite end of the day I still wasn't absorbing what I needed to support my heavy periods.

this is helpful. It does show my bloods are slightly defienct according to the doctors

One supplement never to take is , St Johns Wort, it effects lots of meds inc HRT.

I agree, ask for iron to be looked into, including Ferritin levels. I have found Spatone to be excellent for raising iron levels, and can buy many places easily. It will do no harm to take it. I used to get from Tesco but can also be given on prescription to save you money.

Also have you had your clotting time checked, so you are not being given too high a dose of blood thinner?
