Greetings all, I haven’t spoke for sometime on here so I hope your all coping well.
The main reason I’m back on is to ask you all about Bisoprolol and weight gain. Is it true and how bad can it get.
In the past couple of months I have resumed excercising in my 100 ft back garden ( subject to the monsoon weather we r having). I have now been walking up and down 10 times, three times daily. This has been difficult because of my copd and I have had anemia which both cause breathlessness, but I’ve plodded on.
This is the way I lost 9.5 stone before my heart valve problem began, but to date I’m losing nothing and seem to be gaining weight. My diet consists of mainly chicken, fish, vegetables and even my home help is amazed at no weight loss as she cooks for me.
I will be attempting to contact a doctor soon which is going to be hard enough as it is, to be referred back to a cardiac doctor for advice. I’ve tried this before and got nowhere.
I don’t even know why I’m on this drug, I’ve never been told, and I got them to take me off another drug for heart burn as I’ve never suffered with that.
So any advice you could give would really help before I have to roll up my sleeves and do battle with my GP practice.

I have thought so many times about you..I take bisoprolol as well...and suffer hairloss from this drug..I have put on a few kilos...but did not really think about why..but could well be because of the same drug..so very happy to hear otherwise of your progress and now you have help as well...all great news..As you know Biso is a beta blocker..it slows the heartbeat and gives the heart more time to pump the blood out...so it eases the job of a heart that has been damaged...sometimes..Docs prescribe a few extra drugs that are the "protocol" they have learnt when treating most patients with some kind of HF...I also got rid of a few..getting off of an unecessary heartburn drug is a blessing ...could also sometimes be a reduction in dosage in biso necessary...do not despair..you lost 9st...sometimes there is a stop..and then weightloss begins again..but you are doing all the right things...a chat with an expert can tell you why they prescribed this med for you...there are several different kinds of beta..so if you need it..maybe you can try a different one...all in all...you are doing real good..keep it up!!
Thanks for that. I don’t even know why I’m on it, my blood pressure is the same as it’s always been, sometimes up sometimes down, I’m often told that for a big chap it’s very good. I’ve made contact with Fort Knox, ( GP) and am awaiting g a reply. I threatened them with coming off it myself ( I won’t ) to get them thinking, let’s see what happens
It seems that it is presently necessary to make sure you are heard to get an appt. So be presistant...you have done too much to not be able to get the answers you need now...keep us informed here..and all the best
I am sorry to disagree with you,but I have been on bisoprosol for 6 years and I haven't put on any weight.It's not what you eat it's how much.Good luck.x
Thanks, glad you said that. Perhaps I am looking for an excuse. I’ve just spoken to a cardiac physio who says although you can put on weight it is normally rare and she would put much into it esp as I’m on a low dose
My experience with bisoprolol was extreme, although I can't say it caused me weight gain. Amongst other things, it was the sole cause of extreme breathlessness and dizziness which stopped as soon as I stopped the drug.
I simply stopped taking it without tapering off, I am well aware that this is not recommended, but since my bp had always been ok anyway, getting off the drug and its side effects quickly was paramount to me and paid dividends.
Each persons' case is of course different and I'm definitely not suggesting you do the same. However, I am now a strong believer in listening to our bodies, taking note of changes, trusting its innate ability to heal itself and above all, to lose our fear of challenging doctors. It is in our own best interest to not simply accept all they suggest as suitable for you.
I encourage you to roll up your sleeves and read as much as you can, ask as many questions as you like and don't settle until you are heard and ultimately feeling some improvement.
