bisoprolol and mood

TheBoys profile image
16 Replies

I’ve been taking bisoprolol now for nearly two years. In the past few months I’ve noticed I am getting mood swings- and particularly angry outbursts at friends /partner.

these are getting more frequent and nastier. I have lashed out twice this week already and worry that my personality is changing. I do also get pain from my knee ( am currently awaiting replacement)

Has anyone else ever had anything like this? I m pinning it on the Bisoprolol as nothing else is different. I ve lost weight recently and am on a diet to help me when I have the operation for my knee. But wanted to ask the community before trying my GP

Tnx

paul

i understand your lointing these issues to medication and if it had happened two yeas ago that would ne more likely. My best guess is that in changing your diet unfortunately you may have gone cold turkey on something your body needs

Bisoprolol doesn’t suit everyone. I took it for one year then GP switched for other drugs. That’s worked well for me.

It is too easy for us novices to be fooled in to blaming our problems on drugs/other illness when it’s likely to be none of those !

not surprising you lash out at others, knee pain is the pits.

I am losing weight to get my BMi to the good zone. I am hardly overweight but determined to get to perfection. I lose just about one pound per week. All I changed was cooking porridge for breakfast four times a week. And I now rather like morning porridge.

Good luck

tnx for that / a friend just gave me his view that it’s all rooted knee ipain. This has been going on for a few years and some days are worse than others with not being able to walk comfortably plus now cutting every thing out and trying to walk most days. Still, have managed to lose nearly a stone so far- another to go.

It could be the pain in your knee. Not getting a good night sleep.

Not been on it long as you have, so cannot say? But generally being off mood is quite understandable in these situations. You must try to do some cheerful activities (I know it sounds a bit mad). Turn to music, comedy, spoiling yourself etc, to break up the painful bits in your mind, from time to time, before it spirals out of control and into more meds for depression!

Being in painful state over long periods of time is depressing.

Tnx i like reading and walking /travel though cutting back on my comfort food hasn’t helped at times. I do get bad /depressing days but try and muddle through rather than taking meds for it. - the Dr has offered me sertraline but gave held off to date as try to look forward to being healthier

why are you taking Bisoprolol Paul ? What dose ? Pain is great trigger for irritability . If I don’t get sweaty, train or work hard and use some energy I can get triggered easily , my wife says I have IBS, Irritable B@st@rd Syndrome 🤦🏼.

Maybe speak to your GP about it or the online BHF nurses chat line for some immediate advice ?

I’m on 1.25mg bisoprolol and half a 1.25mg tablet of ramipril, pantoprazole, aspirin and 20mg rosuvastatin. 80mg of pravastatin gave me a big list of side effects 🤦🏼..

hi

I got prescribed bisoprolol when I developed Arrythmia on top of my blood pressure and ended up in hospital. There s a history of AF and blood pressure on my mother side. The 5 mg prescription was too strong and wiped me out so I started splitting the tablet to 2.5. I told my GP but he wouldn’t alter the prescription. The 2.5 works well but I even think that’s working too well at times lol . I have read that weight loss can trigger side effects ( perhaps there’s less of me now) but the knee osteoarthritis has been grindingly difficult at times forcing me into early retirement at 56. I m going to ask for a consultation /review or a referral to cardiology.

Could your blood sugar be dropping too low at times on this diet? I know I and my family get more tetchy when we haven't eaten for a while and liable to quarrel over things that wouldn't usually matter so much. I think it's actually known as "hangry"! The knee pain on top can't be easy and might be the trigger. for outbursts. Maybe look at when you are getting cross and see if you need to space your meals better, lower the GI or just eat a few more calories at these times?

Hmmm - I hadn’t thought about that one. That’s extremely useful Thanks!

obviously if you have been on bisoprolol for 2 years already without a problem I cannot give advice as to the connection to your mood….when I went on it after a few weeks I noticed I got very vivid claustrophobic nightmares that disturbed me significantly, and the sense of anxiety took months to disappear even when removed. I have numerous other painful ailments and know how when it is bad it makes me ‘tetchy plus’!

I had to come off them took them for roughly 10 months first three months fine no bad problems then I noticed bad panicky attacks it worsened my Anxiety went to doctor at Christmas she suggested therapy so I went along with that but didn’t help really kept getting bad episodes so went back and with doctors blessing I weaned off. They are a good drug but not for me

Bisoprolol made me feel awful, generally ill and it affected my mood. That in itself makes you irritable and short tempered. Once I stopped it, I felt more like my old self.

Bisoprolol is a beta blocker. What dose are you taking? IT is known down to slow down the heart rate if it is too low. Report to your G.P. if that is responsible for your mood swing before attributing that medication is cause for your feeling.
