Sleepiness and bisoprolol

bizzy55 profile image

I find that I am prone to falling asleep when sitting doing nothing much. I could sleep many times per day if I surrendered to it.

Is this just normal part of getting older or could be be drug related? I read that it can be a bisoprolol side effect.

I'm 69 and sleep about 6-7 hours most nights. I take bisoprolol, statin, aspirin, amlodipine, ranolazine. lansoprazole and finasteride.

Anyone one else experiencing this?

Thanks. As far as I know, I don't have any other apnoea symptoms but I will look into it.

Hello :-)

Bisoprolol is a well known drug that makes people feel sleepy I take it and it has that effect on me even though I try to resist going to sleep during the day as I do not sleep well at night so when I sleep in the day that makes it worse so it could be Bisoprolol making you feel this way

Have you had your bloods took recently as if you are lacking in iron or your sugars are high especially if your sugars were that could also make you sleep during the day

I would talk with your Doctor and see what they advise

Let us know how you get on :-) x

Hello :-)

I was not eating much sugar but I was dropping to sleep all the time eventually when I had my bloods done it came back I was Diabetic

I was shocked as my sugars had always been fine so worth getting them checked :-) x

Bisoprolol and other beta blockers can affect your blood glucose levels, sadly this is a well know side effect but people are rarely warned about it

Hello :-)

Yes I know as well as they say statins and I am on both

I have had this out with my Doctor who will not have that this is the case and I know I need to take both meds but I do question as I have never had an issue with my sugars at all and they went from normal to just going up , diabetes does not run in my family either :-) x

Bisoprolol makes me very sleepy, and I'm only taking 1.25 mg.Have you tried taking it at night, to see if you are less sleepy during the day?

Personally I don't, because I need to get up at night for the bathroom, which is on a different floor and I am unsteady on the stairs at the best of times.

I agree I am on the same dose as you but feel unsteady and quite dizzy at times too. It is ridiculous as I also have sleep apnoea & insomnia and don't find ironically that Bisoprolol does not help me sleep any longer but I just feel out of it in the day! Bizzy55, I would have all your drugs re-evaluated at the doctors too , as you seem to be on a few. I stopped Lanzoprazole a while ago as I found it made my digestive system worse but that was just me. Check anyway in case there is a contraindication,.I was prescribed Bisoprolol despite having a very low heart rate and low BP to start with and they lowered the dose after I pointed this out (as a side effect of feeling completely fogged out, from 2.5 to 1.25 so clearly someone had not taken this into consideration at the surgery!

Prior to my ablation I was on 5mg Bisoprolol. I went to see the comedian Tom Allen in a theatre seating 1500 people, all laughing, clapping and cheering. I slept through the whole second half!

Please how do you feel after the ablation? Did your condition get better and are you still on Bisoprolol?I am on 10mg of propranolol for Sinus Tachycardia and want to know if ablation is a permanent fix for this situation.

Thank you

So far so good, ablation was March 24. I was only given 50% success due to the amount of damage to my heart. I'm pretty much back to my normal activity, walking 5 miles plus a day, horses, dogs etc (female age 63). I feel better than I have for years. Off daily Bisoprolol, just take half a 1.25 if I'm having a very stressful day.

This is very encouraging. I am hopeful. Thank you.

I'm 71, I've been like that for years, started on bisoprolol and other medications relatively recently, made no difference either way.

i am 78 and on bisoprolol. I too am prone to falling asleep during the day then find it hard to drop off at night. Not sure if its because of bisoprolol though.

I take 1.25mg of Bisoprolol. It was making me tired, so my cardiac nurse told me to take it before I went to bed. This has worked so much better for me. Maybe give that a try? Good luck.

Well, I've suffered from insomnia for years - so no. But it did relax me.

I'm 52 and have been taking 5mg Bisoprolol for 18 months following heart surgery. I too have been wondering on Bisoprolol causing sleepiness during the day. Whether in church, cinema, watching telly and two days ago during panto, I would drift off to sleep.

Bisoprolol has a number of side effects (listed on the info included in the packaging) - if it leaves you feeling drowsy you can try taking it later in the day, but once you establish the best time for taking it you need to stick to it

Unfortunately it can also cause disturbed sleep so you may find an evening dose doesn't suit you either!

This is all part and parcel of being labelled a Heartie!!! I have similar sleepy spells like this ever since my HA. I would sum it up as follows, your body is in a state of repair with the aid of meds and that leads to uncontrolable sleep, which is generally agood thing. That is until you can "schedule" your sleep pattern to certain limits. It's not perfect but I can almost control nodding off.

Not only did I fall asleep during the day, I could barely get out of bed in the morning -- and I was only in my 50s. My cardiologist switched me to metoprolol, which isn't perfect but is less extreme.

Hi bizzy55 , I was prescribed bisoprolol for suspected microvascular disease , I was having angina like chest pain that wasn’t responding to nitro spray. I was only on bisoprolol for about six weeks and I was extremely tired. I could barely stay awake after seven in the evening, very unusual for me. I was also experiencing more chest pain on it. I was taken off of it as it wasn’t addressing the problem it was initially prescribed for, and all disappeared. We are still trying to figure out what the cause of my chest tightness is

That's exactly how I was on the lowest dose of bisoopralol. I couldn't get o ut of my chair. I just slept. Talk to your G P who can try something else.

6 - 7 hours at night is probably not enough, aim for at least 8 hours.

If you are not doing anything nodding off is not unusual, especially with your meds. Can you find something stimulating to keep you awake? Word/numbef puzzles, going for a short walk or a gentle sport such as bowls, indoor in the winter, outdoor in the summer.

I have the same problem, no mental or physical stimulation = a short sleep at any time of the day.

bizzy55 profile image
bizzy55 in reply tobowls12

Thanks very much. I tend to wake up around 7 am and for the last few days I have made a point of sleeping on for a few more hours. It seems to have helped.

That seems to the same for me. No mental or physical stimulation and I'm prone to nodding off. It's one of the hazards of being retired. Not enough to keep busy.

bisopropol caused insomnia for me and my cardio told me to take it first thing in morning and just the tiniest dose … I had no idea it can cause sleepiness too
