Dapagliflozin and Type 1 Diabetes

Hi All

Has anyone with Type 1 Diabetes been prescribed with Dapagliflozin?

I have type 1 diabetes and was prescribed dapagliflozin when admitted to A&E and diagnosed with heart failure resulting in getting an ICD back in July and was kept on it until last week when my heart function nurse stopped it. Apparently there is a fear of it causing Diabetic KetoAcidosis but there isn't much evidence available.

It's a shame it's been stopped as it was helping control my diabetes as well as help my heart and since coming off it the diabetes is proving difficult to control with recent meds changes. (Just started on Entresto)

Love to hear of anyones experiences with this.

Thanks

Hi I’m on Dapagliflozen I was put on it as soon as I was diagnosed with heart failure. I was told it was originally a drug for diabetes because when it was given to diabetic patients they found that it improved the ones who also had heart failure hence why they started giving it to people with just heart failure that didn’t have diabetes. The cardiologist said at the time it’s ‘the new wonder drug for heart failure’. That’s all I know really. Perhaps it’s different for type 1? I think it’s best finding out from your cardiologist and check with him/her why it was stopped? Perhaps you could speak with the secretary to pass on the question if you can’t see him directly or pay for a consultation to sort it out maybe. Look it up and find out everything you can about it first so you ask the right questions as it may have been a mistake that they stopped it? Good luck and hope you find some answers.

Yes...it is different for type 2 diabetics. I wrote a post about this a couple of days ago. It is not recommended for type 2 but the reasons are a bit technical and difficult to understand at first...at least they were for me!

Hi...I wrote a post on this subject a couple of days ago...have a look. Dapagliflozin isn't recommended for Type 1 diabetics and it takes a bit of digging to understand the reason why as it is supposed to have clearly proven benefits for heart failure. It looks to me (and I am certainly no professional medic!) as though it should be ok so long as you keep a very close watch on your ketone levels.

Thanks Poppeye, have just read your post on this subject and it's excellent at explaining the reasoning behind the decision to stop the Dapagliflozin. It certainly wasn't explained to me that way last week.

I'm also convinced that my cardiologist either hadn't recognised the type 1 diabetes or had simply missed it and thereby issued Dapagliflozin to me. Oh well, probably best they have stopped it now and I'll just have to battle on with the diabetes and other meds.

Not what you're looking for?
