Rise In Type II Diabetes In The Young

Another item that caught my attention on the BBC today: bbc.co.uk/news/health-45224668

I am aware that this is a heart health forum and not a diabetes forum but the reason I am posting it is that Type II diabetes is linked to being overweight/obese. However, heart disease is linked also linked to being overweight/obese with the problem being made worse if diabetes in present. What I really find scary is the number of overweight/obese children. When I went to school it was quite rare - at a guesstimate based on memory of many decades ago it probably only ran at 1% - 3%. I know that a couple are no longer with us and of another that is in poor health. Cardiac services are overloaded so something has to be done but what? There is the issue of junk food and I include in this the fact that many families get regular takeaways. But personally I think a major issue is that children don't run around very much these days. My old schools have all expanded over a large percentage of their playing fields. Also games/PE only forms a minor part of the school day. We did PE daily and had one afternoon of games per day. So how do we get children/young people eating a sensible diet and how do we get them moving?

Another BBC report from Glasgow recently showed that the average portion size of takeaway chips has increased by 80% since 2002!

The other shocker for me is the number of food outlets at mainline stations e. g. Liverpool Street, from which most journeys are less than 1.5 hours.

Compulsory school cookery lessons would be a start in improving health of our kids. Climate change and overuse of plastics have become big things in schools; the same emphasis should be devoted to health and nutrition.

(Better stop now- grumpy old woman rant could be kicking off).

There are a vast number of food outlets in the larger towns near me. I am sure some people spend the day grazing. One person used to buy half-a-dozen donuts at a time and eat the lot. I would estimate he weighs over 25 stone! :(

I hurt myself before the day I had PE cos it was too competitive so prefeered sports in play time and out of school.
