The most recommended ones tend to be All Clear and Staysure. How are you describing your HF? Have you been told where in Stage I to IV. Insurance companies dislike terms like Mild or "Touch of".
If you have already been declined by some insurance providers it suggests your options are limited. However you could talk to a local insurance broker who knows the market and will be incentivised to get you a deal.
Are you using the specialist insurance companies that cover pre existing medical conditions? I unfortunately have a very long list of medical conditions including heart failure and am still able to get cover albeit very expensive. I currently use All Clear.
I use justtravelcover.com which gives a selection of policies. It takes 5 minutes to input the information. If you wait an hour after receiving details of possible cover they will send you a discount offer of 10%.
I have had a 4 way Heart bypass and still receive cover at a reasonable price.
Are you still being actively treated or waiting for tests as companies want stability.? That has an impact as does your destination. The US and cruises tend not to be liked and I dare say locations that are remote would also attract a premium.
Hi Bablo I’ve found that normal Insurance comparison sites eg Go Compare etc now quote for Travel Insurance with Medical conditions. Just tick the box to say you have a condition and drop downs appear at each stage to click on what issue you have. Eg my Angina and Stent is entered by selecting them on drop down menu. The drop down selections appear exactly the same as specialised Medical Insurance provider sites so must be using same software. Anyhowz one point of note is that I found that whilst the Insurance is more expensive by some way when you declare a Medical Condition the price difference between Single Trip and Annual policies seems less ? Hope this helps
we’ve just taken out annual policy with post office . Normally use staysure , but they were so expensive as soon as I mentioned my stent . Kept trying to tell me I had to list angina as a condition , and I was saying , no , I did have angina before the stent but not anymore , the stent fixed that . Gave up with them in the end . Good luck bablo
Try “all clear” they were brilliant . I’m awaiting an ablation operation ,and I have coronary artery disease, nobody would insure me apart from them . They were so helpful
I’m struggling with insurance as I’m still waiting a proper diagnosis following a heart attack and I’m travelling in two weeks. I may have to travel with basic insurance and not declare medical history. And then obviously I’m not covered should any thing happen but I have an EU health card. At least this way I am covered for non-medical issues like flight cancellations.
Hi everyone, my first time on this site . I have several conditions and recently had a mini stroke. I just insured with Cover for you, without any problems. You can also try Admiral. Good luck x
I think that’s the issue, some companies will cover medical conditions but I become unstuck as I am waiting test results and a diagnosis. I haven’t spoken to any companies yet, only looked on their websites, so it may be possible but I didn’t want to leave too much of a footprint in case I get a diagnosis quickly and it wasn’t necessary to have the red flag! I believe it was only a mild heart attack. My angiogram was normal so I don’t have any obstructed arteries. Working diagnosis is MINOCA. I have echo tomorrow and cMRI next week. No treatment so far except for tablets.
As mentioned by kkatz you risk not being covered at all so as you say you need to get the condition excluded. Are your forthcoming tests at the same hospital or dept that originally saw you or was original provisional diagnosis through the GP?
You can use the opportunity of being physically there to find the best route to getting a quick official diagnosis and treatment plan. You also need to ask if you are fit to fly if that is how you are getting to your destination. If Its to America or a cruise I would rethink my plans.
All the tests are at the same hospital as where I was originally admitted, although I am very lucky as I have private medical insurance through work so I haven’t had to wait too long for the follow up tests. I hope that also helps me get a quick diagnosis. It’s only a 4 night break to Spain so I feel reasonably confident but I will definitely check with consultant and go down the route of insurance with an exclusion, if needed. Thank you for your insights, really helpful.
Have you booked a holiday? If you have then it is wise to be getting yourself insurance cover asap, because if you dont and find you can't travel for whatever good reason, between now and when you do eventually get insurance then you won't be able to recover the cost of your holiday. The normal advice is book then get travel insurance without delay
Thanks, I agree! A bit of a mistake not to take out the insurance as soon as I booked the holiday. Definitely a lesson learned for the future. Luckily it’s not too high value but obviously I may lose out. My MI was very recent so I was hoping to have more of a firm diagnosis before arranging the insurance, especially as it’s all last minute regardless and I didn’t want to be rejected. But perhaps I should try and proceed regardless. This is all new to me! I’ve barely had a day off work in my life and could barely remember to take a vitamin!
I believe if you don't declare medical conditions you won't be covered for anything.I am with Avanti and I believe they gave me the opportunity to exclude medical conditions.
If you are awaiting outcomes, tests or procedures most will refuse to insure.
You have to declare them first though.I actually travelled without insurance 3 trips (30 days each) a year for 2 years with all medical conditions excluded that was with Staysure but I already had annual insurance and excluded while awaiting procedures. But only had AFib,15 year old stents, previous tia, seizures all of which were unlikely to kill me.Portugal with local a & e 20km away.
beware of going with a standard company. They’ll cover you but it’s another story if you need to claim. Look in depth at their trustpilots based on claims not purchases.
Try Admiral recently got a good price for annual insurance with 10% discount code too hubby has recently had Aortic Root surgery and pacemaker fitted for Atrial fibrilation and Atrial Block Good luck. Go direct don't do the compare sites
I'm with All Clear and not only have I heart issues but also a miriad of other serious ailments. Cost me £700 for an annual policy for myself and my wife who also has heart issues. You could also try Staysure and Avanti.
I recently applied for insurance for a cruise. I got quotes via Compare the Market. Quotes I received weren't too outrageous. I did contact the company I decided to go with (Love it Cover it) due to a slightly ambiguous question about having ever had raised cholesterol. I asked if this meant anything above 0, or raised from a previous test (I have only had one test to my knowledge), or raised above a set recommended level. They responded: "The information will depend on the medical history and whether your GP/medical professional has marked any test results as raised/reason for concern." As my cholesterol was not above the recomended maximum level and was not considered to be the contribution to my NSTEMI heart attack I ticked "No" which made a saving of about £50. If you are planning biking on your holiday that will likely also affect your insurance prices. Good luck, hope you have a great trip
Try changing your bank account to a bank that offers 'Worldwide' travel insurance, you still have to declare any health conditions and they will apply a monthly excess but its far less than getting a yearly travel insurance with insurance companies.
Co-Op go to 80 and charge an extra £5 ish if you have a pre-existing illness, so at around £240.00 a year isn't too bad for banking and worldwide travel insurance.
sounds to be a reasonable deal if you are with the COOP but bank account linked travel insurancinsurance is rarely given beyond 70. My Premier account covered me for free until I reached 70. Now I get an annual reminder that I am not covered and should seek Travel Insurance from a provider.
My husband and I were going to Jamaica. He is on blood pressure meds and statins. I however have a mild heart condition LBBB. All the insurances I looked at were very costly. We then realised husband had an account with Barclays that also had travel insurance attached. We found out the provider and called them. Had a very in depth discussion with a very helpful person and they confirmed we were both covered for the conditions we had. They also sent me an email to confirm this. It is worth checking if you have this kind of bank account. But it is also worth calling any insurer and speaking to a person, heart conditions are nuanced and online questions can be a bit black and white.
Hi I use insurancewith.com they cover people with pre existing conditions. I have had a transplant and cancer and I had no problems getting insured with them, they have good reviews on trust pilot. Char
If your only health issue is Stage 1 Heart Failure (I prefer the term Heart Insufficiency) I would not expect you to have any problems expect maybe WorldWide, or North America and the Caribbean. I know someone who got it with HF and was in his eighties. Obviously all health issues must be declared. Before the Tox someone contacted the local radio consumer programme because the insurance company would not pay out after a three week hospital stay with pneumonia. As the insurance company rightly said not declaring COPD was withholding information not a trivial oversight! I think the total cost to him was about £50k.
I have asthma, Af, Prostate removal 15 years ago, and on bp meds. I have tried all previously mentioned companies for travel ins and all of them are expensive, whilst the majority are totally over the top. So I tried just to cover us for a 2 week holiday and still out of all proportion cost wise. We have now decided to not travel abroad now as the cost of insurance could cost more than the cost of the holiday. With the world as it is and the chaos at airports etc I do not think We are missing a lot.
After my heart attack I wanted to see how I could cope with airports and flying.
So we started with our small local airport and flew 25 minutes to Guernsey. Easy as anything. When all the nonsense starts in October with finger printing and EGates to get into the Schengen area, will likely travel to both Channel islands, Belfast, Dublin, Isle of Man, Inverness and ferry to Isle of Wight. Depending on your location you might have other nearer "exotic" locations.
I detest large airports these days and all the hassle involved with flying overseas. Travel insurance will be much lower
