EF of 35

Hello all,

I was first diagnosed with heart failure in November 2017, had an ICD fitted 6 months later.

Last June I was taken into hospital with sepsis, I went into septic shock twice and almost died twice, they suspected that those nasty little critters were hiding in the ICD.

After returning home I still felt quite ill, ended up being taken back to the hospital and I had a repeat attack of sepsis, so once again weeks of tests and antibiotics I had the ICD removed and was allowed home a week later.

My latest scan shows an EF of 35, I am hoping that they will be able to control it with medication as I was told it's not advisable to have another implant. Appointment is on the 30th so I will let you know how I go on.

Hi Potterb13/Dave the slave, when I hear not so good experiences re: implants, I'm quite relieved that my pacemaker implant didn't go to plan and I don't have one. I have an EF of 25% with LBBB and I take great medication. I didn't realise that EF can be improved upon until I read posts on this forum, healthy eating and keeping active seems to be the order of the day. I won't see my consultant until August 2025 so I won't know until then if my EF has improved until I get an echo. I see my cardiac nurse every 6 months and I feel well looked after. Please give an update on how your appointment goes on the 30th. Take care. PK.

Sorry to hear you’ve been so unwell and hope you’re feeling better now. My E.F wasn’t great post O.H.S and still isn’t up to my pre-op level now (10 months later). As a result my Consultant prescribed Dapagliflozin. Has def helped. My Dad is now on it too - as has end stage heart failure and initially had a noticeable decrease in the fluid retention in his legs.

Might be worth mentioning at your appointment if you’re not already taking it and wld possibly be a suitable candidate? (I had to suggest it for my Dad). Hope you get on ok.

Thank you for replying I have been on it since September, unfortunately I am lots of other medication too as I have COPD and asthma too.

After over 40 years of illness I do feel like giving up, but I'm still here, I must have been a really bad person in another life.

Oh Bless You! Life can be so unfair sometimes and being unwell with multiple, chronic conditions wld be enough to make anyone feel low. I’ve found this group to be very cathartic since I’ve joined. After my surgery I felt so overwhelmed by the enormity of what I’d been through but, being able to now chat with others - who have also walked in my shoes and understand exactly the ups and downs of recovery - has just been so helpful.

I hope you too, find the support you need. Fingers crossed you get some answers on the 30/4. 🤞🏻
