Red light/infra red therapy advice

Hi, does anyone know if it is safe to use red light/ infra red therapy on a shoulder injury if you have coronary stents fitted after heart attack. I’m looking to use it but not sure if it’s worth contacting my Dr about it.

Many thanks for any help offered.

I use one of these lamps. The amount of energy used is very low compared to the old infrared only lamps, and to be effective they are placed very near to the site to be treated, so the interaction with the body is very localised. So in your case where you are treating your shoulder I would say they will cause no issues with your heart stents. However that's my opinion so if you are still unsure perhaps give the BHF Heart Helpline a call. Finally I am not entirely convinced about these lamps. I have had a go on at least two areas including my shoulder and they made no difference. Hope it works for you however.

Thank you for your reply, I'm desperate to ease this injury, physiotherapy has got me so far but every time i do something a bit heavier it starts it all off again.

I will ring the nurses though just to make sure.

I know what you are experiencing only too well. I have a rotator cuff problem which is slowly getting worse. I had an injection which only lasted a few weeks. Rest it and believe it may have worked, then lift something or stretch up and you are back to square one. My NHS specialist wasn't much help either.

I am thinking it is safe for you because, I had 25 rounds of daily chest radiation in less than 2 years after receiving 2 stents, also many ct scans and so on, at no time was any doctor concerned about the stents.

Thank you for your reply, I checked with my cardio nurse this morning and she said it is safe. No guarantees it will work but it’s worth a try.
