swollen ankles with red spots

hello all,

my ankles have been very swollen lately, when I wake up they are fine but as the day goes on they swell more and more. It doesnt seem to make any difference if I move/walk a lot or not, they still get swollen.

Right now Im on a cruise to Portugal and not only are my ankles incredibly swollen and achy, they now have red spots too! I don't have any contact with my doctor right now, and dont feel unwell in other ways, so Im not too worried or concerned that I need emergency care, but any ideas on the red spots?

My history is Coronary artery disease (5 stents 5 years ago). I take Amlodopine, Bisoprolol,Atotvastatin (no changes to original dose 5 years ago) and Edoxoban - recently prescribed for newly diagnosed AF ( swollen ankles doesnt seem to be a recognised side effect)

thanks all

Hello :-)

I wonder if you are using any different soap or anything and you are having a reaction ?

There should be a Doctor on the Cruise ship I would pay them a visit to see what they think

Let us know how you get on and enjoy that lovely Cruise you are on :-) x

swelling of ankles could also be down to the heat as you are in a warm place-also if you are not walking around a lot can contribute too. When resting raise your feet above the level of your heart and relax. Not sure about the spots-have you had varicose veins removed in the past-smaller veins take over the job and can result in spider veins developing. Enjoy your loud at and check it out when you get back!

Hello Tab1966. I'm wondering if your red spots are the same as mine were 9 months ago. It was the first sign of oedema in my case. Mine got worse and worse and eventually I developed foot ulcers. Please see your GP asap. The fluid (lymph) is collecting in the lowest part of your body...your ankles. After lying in bed overnight it evens out through your body then the next day gravity sends it down again. I think your GP will prescribe furosemide (water tablet) . My cardiologist said I had fluid overload caused by Afib. I was diagnosed with the beginning of heart failure. I too took bisoprolol for many years, 10mg a day and even then they weren't working for me. In the end I had to have a pacemaker.

I'm still taking furosemide now and probably will need to for the rest of my life with Apixaban (blood thinner) to keep well.

Raising your legs for an hour or so in the afternoon would be beneficial.

Does your cruise ship have a medical officer you could speak to.

Anyway, enjoy your cruise.

hello,

are you doing a lot of walking? It could be golfers vasculitis which can flare up in hot weather with exercise.

I always found my ankles swelled on a cruise. I used to blame the metal decks. Try and sit with your feet up as much was possible. The little red spots will go but might leave a little staining behind
