Hi me again sorryAnyone taking clopidogrel antiplatelet med been able to also take ibuprofen for a few days
Im having dbl tooth extraction Mon and usually take alternate doses paracetamol then ibuprofen for aft procedure but now im on clopidogrel i was told NO ibuprofen
From past experience i know para wont be enough
Gp has NO appt avail to talk to me not even on phone
You could buy some co-codamol from the pharmacy, they are a bit stonger than paracetamol and you can take them with clopidogrel. Not recommended for more than 3 days tjough
The ones you can buy are not as strong as those on prescription. I was told by my g.p. if you only wanted to take one, take a paracetamol with it as well to get the full effect of paracetamol . Obviously you shouldn't take 2 co-codamol and more paracetamol together. Hope your surgery goes well. I had a tooth extracted earlier this year when on clopidogrel, didn't have too much trouble with bleeding after thank goodness
Hi Jessica. That's a dilemma I've just been sharing with a ripping headache that paracetamol won't touch. But, on antiplatelet, Clopidogrel, you shouldn't take Ibuprofen. But you might want to check whether there are oral versions like say Bongela pain relief brands that could be used.
Otherwise ask for a telephone appointment or prescription change from your GP, you don't need to go in as such to discuss pain relief.
If the GP access is so restricted, I think having to have dental treatment is an emergency as is pain relief, then ring 111 for a solution and or go back to pharmacist.
Do let us know what the outcome is. I'm sure I'm going to be in that position at some point
SO TODAY I managed to find a very nice pharmacist in a Tesco supermarket pharmacy, without a massive queue, who patiently took the trouble and time to explain and have a chat with me
And I am categorically NOT allowed any ibuprofen, I also checked abt the ibuprofen and diclofenac skingels that I used to have for my dodgy knees, not allowed either
So its paracetamol and she cautioned abt the co codamol as Id had a reaction to a small dose of codeine in AE aft a fall yrs ago
My late Mum had co codamol for severe arthritis so I know the side effects of that
So Itll be "man up get on with it" and itll hopefully settle by the Thurs when im then off to Dermatologyfor a "punch biopsy" of a "zygomatic arch cyst " on my poor face,
I was never a great beauty in all my years but for heavens sake what next
Think its called "getting yr moneys worth out of the wonderful NHS"
I'd call 111 and ask for advice... I'd expect you would need to stop taking the clopidogrel for a day or two tbh but definitely worth double checking.
Well this is interesting to me.
I had an Nstemi 8 weeks ago. Asked for ibuprofen whilst collecting a prescription. By chance the heart attack was mentioned. The pharmacist overheard and said yiu cannot take ibuprofen with your meds. Well I was very surprised as I’ve never been told that an maybe have missed reading it somewhere.
I use ibuprofen to help with the flare up in pain after knee replacement and when my lesser migraine headaches kick off.
So by chance a lesson has been learnt for me and I will send a form to my GP and ask for something compatible.
I do hope you find a solution because Paracetomal is excellent but you’ll need something more for your extracts. Hope all goes well and thank you through your message as you’ve helped me.

I agree with earlier contributors that CoCodamol would give you better pain relief I wouldn’t worry about reacting personally it is a very small dose of codeine.
My respiratory consultant says “I am just one of those allergic people who struggle with all kinds of drugs”
I have had a lot of extractions the last couple of years. Get home as soon as you can and into bed with everything you need to hand for a few hours.
I am glad I had the work done then as my condition has deteriorated recently and sitting at the dentist’s with my portable oxygen on is now a bit difficult.
Just stop taking the Clopidogrel as suggested by the dentist. Missing a few doses will not significantly raise the chance that you might have a heart attack.
I would avoid taking ibuprofen with or without any other medication, and very definitely for more than two consecutive doses. It's awful stuff and can induce gastro intestinal bleeds as I found out years ago and was told if I had lost any more blood I would have needed a blood transfusion to recover my haemoglobin levels. So if you are taking clopidogrel and are already susceptible to bleeding and bruising, ibuprofen is not something to consider in my view, paracetamol is fine.
My GP advised me never to take Ibuprofen whilst taking Clopidogrel but I am prescribed Co Codamol for my arthritis. However your dentist may well have advised you to stop taking Clopidogrel due to the risk of bleeding after the extraction. I was advised by my consultant to stop taking Clopidogrel for five days before a minor operation.
Hi my consultant told me no one with any kind of heart issues should take ibuprofen, I take prescription co codamol but I see you have had a reaction to it. The over the counter one is a much lower dose and may help, if your doctor or practice nurse aren't available maybe the BHF nurse or phoning 111 could suggest something else. I hope everything goes well. Char
Tooth extraction I find is now painless and as long as there is no after infection paracetamol is more than enough for me. That said there are loads of strong pain killers out there that are heart friendly but the medical profession will always try and avoid giving them to you as most can be abused, which is ridiculous as you will only want one or two. Not sure when you last had a dental procedure but really they are so good now you will feel nothing.
Read the patient information leaflet that comes with the medication, it will tell you in there.
