Hello I do believe it is normal to stop Clopidogrel one year after bypass, Clopidogrel and Aspirin are known as dual anti platelet therapy and the Aspirn part is normally for life ! That was what happened in my case after Bypass and Further Stents. Can't comment on the Bisoprolol as that is a personal dose suited to your current situation. In my case I am on 7.5mg and have been for a few years.

Best Regards

I didn't have any side effects from stopping clopidogrel after a year. I'm only on 1.25 mg of bisoprolol as they tried me on 2.5mg after my heart attack but my heart rate went down to 43 bpm.

Hi Charl - my daily Clopidogrel and Lansoprazole were stopped one year after a triple bypass eighteen months ago with no side effects at all (aside from being delighted that this was two off the list!). I think this is standard practice after a bypass, although Aspirin is for life. At two check-ups over the course of 10 months, my heart rate was still a little fast and I was having a lot of ectopic beats, so my daily Bisoprolol dose has been increased twice - from an original 1.25mg after the op, then 2.5mg and I'm now on 5mg with no further problems since December last year. I think it depends entirely on the individual's HR, blood pressure, etc. as to the dosage. My GP told me that most people are started on 1.25mg Bisoprolol and then the dosage tweaked if need be when they see how you get along with it. Glad the aches have gone re the virus, hopefully the cough and runny nose will get better soon too! Carol

Hi cee, just reading your reply , how come you have been taken off lansoprozle whilst still taking aspirin, I was told the lansoprazole would stop gut irritation that can be caused by aspirin.

ChoochSiesta profile image

The problem with Lansoprozle is it interferes with nutrient absorption which can also cause issues. I have been on Aspirin for 10 years with no gut irritation.

Ahh ok , I was originally on 1 in the morning with my tablets including aspirin and 1 in the evening as I was getting some reflux acid and thinking it was partly angina . I'm now off the 1 in the evening because of a change of diet .

Lansoprazole rarely causes gut issues but Aspirin frequently does and is well documented. PPIs ae lifesavers for some people and have been given a bad press by some mostly media outlets.

Hi Bluelobby - I was prescribed Lansoprazole, together with Clopidogrel, to counteract against with any gut problems I may have had while taking both Clopidogrel and Aspirin as a dual therapy after my triple-bypass as the dual therapy can be quite hard on the gut! I have switched to an enteric-coated aspirin to help avoid this. As I also suffer from diverticular disease, my GP has suggested that I might like to keep lansoprazole on my prescription to use as a pill-in-the-pocket should I need it. I haven't needed to use it in the three months since I stopped the Clopidogrel but while still taking the aspirin. Hope that helps. Carol

Hi cee yeah I'm on both those meds until the 8th oct , I'm being taken off clopidogrel then as it's been a year since my heart attack. All the best

All the best to you too, Blue - you could always do what my GP suggested and use the lansoprazole as pill-in-the-pocket just in case the aspirin still upsets your system. You mightn't need them all the time once you come off clopidogrel. My sister swears by them, they were added to her prescription when she had chemo recently. They've really helped her with indigestion she's had for years - especially if she drinks red wine! 😂

Haha , I'll see what he says in October , your sister has the right idea , having a few cold beers myself after a hard days slog ha . Hope shes ok

Hope you enjoyed your beers, Bluelobby - it's certainly the weather for them! Sis is now grand - she was diagnosed with breast cancer in September last year, had chemo to shrink the lumps then had them removed, (after which she got the all clear - YAAY😁 !) followed by a course of radiotherapy. I'm very proud of her and how bravely she handled it all, she volunteers part-time in a charity shop and throughout it all only missed 2 days at the shop! She went off to Majorca last Monday for a week with the girls and is due home tomorrow - no doubt she's being enjoying the red wine over there!🍷🍾😁

Good Luck at your next appointment.

No problem for me coming off Clopidogrel after one year and just on aspirin. Bisoprolol dropped to 1.25 as any higher and heart rate too low.

Hi Charl,

Stopping Clopidogrel after 1 year had no effect on me, other than it became safer to wet shave! 😁

As for Bisoprolol, I was started on 3.75mg and I experienced dreadful feelings of impending doom and I woukd try to pass out when I stood up. I got it reduced to 2.5mg and things improved a bit, but I needed to go down to 1.25mg. I still get dizzy sometimes when I stand up... it seems to come and go. Certainly I had no negative effects by reducing the dosage.

I hope this helps.

Had quadruple but pass on 25th July and I’m still on clopidigrel & 1.25mg bisoprolol which was reduced from 3.75.. it was making me spaced out and I felt really weird and pretty cold with it. So glad it has been reduced. I suppose everyone reacts differently to their meds. My BP seems to be staying the low end of normal and ranged 107/69 104/70 occasionally 120/80.

👋 Hi Charl70, following my Bypass September 2022 I was on the usual medication 💊 mix including Clopidgrel + Bisoprolol etc. Come February 2023 the side effects were becoming difficult to manage. After a conversation with a very sympathetic nurse at the BHF I pretty much nailed down the culprit to the protonpump inhibitor Lansoprazole. But, I couldn't drop that as it's essential medication if you're taking Clopidgrel.

However, I read that after 90 days following a Bypass in the States there's a big debate on whether to drop the Clopidgrel as the risks of a bleed exceeds the risks of a clot. Whether this is the correct thing to do or not, I could no longer cope with the side effects 😕 of the Lansoprazole, so I took a chance and stopped the Clopidgrel. Within a week, the side effects vanished.

I don't know your personal circumstances, but I felt a 100% better having dropped Clopidgrel and even better a couple of weeks later after dropping all the other medications I was on.

Since then I only take an aspirin on a daily basis. I took a big chance stopping them all including the statins, but I did so after speaking to a cardiologist and I wouldn't recommend anyone else following my example under any circumstances!

Hope everything goes well for you, going by my own personal experience you've nothing to worry about.

Best regards,

Denis

I’ve been taken off Lansoprazole 8 weeks after my operation. Still on Ticagrelor and aspirin, the Ticagrelor is to be stopped on the anniversary of my discharge from hospital. Only downside at the moment with these is, as expected, I bruise easily and bleed copiously if I cut myself (including shaving).

Stopping the Ticagrelor, or in your case Clopidogrel, is quite normal I understand as the anti-platelet is done to prevent blood clots forming as a result of the body reacting to, in my case, the stents and a replacement Aortic Valve as well as the CABG.

I assume my bloods show I don’t need the Lansoprazole. Anyway I’ve not yet seen any ill effects from it being stopped.

Still on my starter Bisoprolol dose of 1.25mg. Resting heart rate around 60 but can drop to low 50’s overnight. BP no higher than 120’s/70’s.

Hi

I don't think you will get any side effects from stopping Clopidogrel, I certainly did not. Like Aspirin, it's an anti platelet drug to make the blood less sticky.

Bisoprolol lowers the amount of adrenaline and noradrenaline taken up by the heart in particular. It's a selective beta blocker. When I was on 2.5mg of Bisoprolol after my MI, moving around felt like wading through treacle. I think that's the idea in part, it slows you down while the heart recovers. In my case my RHR was around 60 and it was difficult to get it above 90-100.

After a year, the cardiologist desided to stop the Bisoprolol. He told me to do it gradually to avoid side effects or with drawal symptoms.. So I reduced it to 1.25, and then half of that (not easy since the 1.25 pills are pretty small.

Currently my RHR is around 70-75
