The Virtual Tea Party Open All Week!

Hello and welcome to Virtual Tea Party! Eat and drink as much as you like because here everything is calorie, carb and fat free. Today is a bank holiday which I find rather a joke as all the four main banks have closed their branches in this area and expect you to travel miles. And if you do it has three multi-purpose machines and two cash points with one member of staff wandering round helping people that having problems with the machines and one cashier with a very long queue! Anyway to get you in the mood some bank jokes

Why do they say money doesn't grow on trees when banks have branches?

My bank wrote to me saying I had an outstanding balance. The time I spent doing gymnastics obviously paid off.

I started a bank cashier but was sacked on the first day. A customer asked me to check their balance and so I gave them a push and they fell to the floor!

So many people missed yesterday's event that I have decided to extend it 24x7 till midnight on Sunday. Just drop in whenever and see if there is anyone to share food and drink with, or have a chat to!

Afternoon, Michael. I've been preparing for this gathering by scoffing a huge bar of white chocolate, so I'm all set now.

I've brought along a boxful of London scones (butter first, then jam, then cream). I also have a very large bottle of Prosecco. Which I had to open 30 minutes ago... I've sent an urgent call out to Mr Sainsbury for more.

MichaelJH profile image
MichaelJHHeart Star in reply to Alison_L

Its not exactly busy Alison. I will have a Prosecco please if it has arrived. I have some smoked salmon canapés if you would like some....

Alison_L profile image
Alison_L in reply to MichaelJH

You can certainly have a glass of Prosecco - I might have ordered too much. Do you have any prawn canapes? I don't eat salmon :(

MichaelJH profile image
MichaelJHHeart Star in reply to Alison_L

Sorry no! Never thought of it as I allergic to crustaceans!

Alison_L profile image
Alison_L in reply to MichaelJH

I'm fine with crustaceans but have a problem with "swimmy" fish. Typical as prawns aren't as healthy as most fish. Especially when you smother them in rose-marie sauce!

Hi Michael! I didn’t get this message till today, Tuesday! Hope there are some leftovers for me! Shall we share my Victoria sponge? X

GrannyE profile image
GrannyE in reply to Bartie123

May I join you today please as I only got this invitation today too. I will bring a really luscious chocolate orange cake with cream and hope that there will still be lots of scones, strawberry jam, strawberries and cream. I do like to pop a sliced strawberry in with the jam.

Alison_L profile image
Alison_L in reply to Bartie123

Ah, sorry, Bartie. Michael did put up an invite last week, but it obviously didn’t reach everyone.

There should be various burgers around; just put them in the oven for 20 minutes. Also piles of scones, jam on cream, cream on jam, and cream on jam on butter. If you find any tempura prawns, I’d avoid them, as they’ve been lying around all night! Also still plenty of Prosecco, and some gin & whisky. It might be a bit early for the latter, but it’s never too early for Prosecco. Enjoy 😀

Hello!Just back from walking my dog.

Just making a blackberry and apple crumble.

There's a bumper crop of blackberries this year.

MichaelJH profile image
MichaelJHHeart Star in reply to Milkfairy

I used to pick then at the bottom of the garden but the developer that brought my house got rid of everything - the rockery, the pond, the alpine garden, the shubbery, the sherry tree, etc. In fact the front is just shingle and the back just lawn! :(

Alison_L profile image
Alison_L in reply to MichaelJH

That's sad. We're just completing on the sale of my mum's house. Dad was a very keen gardener, and my brother and I grew up playing perfectly happily on a small lawn surrounded by rose bushes. The rest of the garden was given over to vegetable patches and flower beds. The new family moving in have 2 small children, and all the neighbours are expecting them to pull up all the roses and everthing else, and flatten everything so that the kids can play "safely"!

Yoga2011 profile image
Yoga2011 in reply to Alison_L

That would be a shame if they did. The house my mum and Nan lived in had lots of roses but my son never hurt himself when very young.

Alison_L profile image
Alison_L in reply to MichaelJH

Just realised you had a sherry tree. Very rare...

Alison_L profile image
Alison_L in reply to Milkfairy

Hello, Mf. Lots of exercise going on this afternoon, I can't be doing with it. Shall I make some creamy custard to go with your crumble? I said to someone else yesterday that I must get out and check my local blackberry bushes. I suspect they'll be nearly over by now.

GrannyE profile image
GrannyE in reply to Milkfairy

There certainly is. Have been picking them for quite a while now. Never known such a good crop. Have been making blackberry and homegrown apple crumble made with buckwheat and almond flour. Works quite well. Anyone want some?

Hi everyone! Sorry I am late. As it feels distinctly autumnal I have been getting burger supplies. I have organic beef burgers, chicken breast and halloumi cheese with add ons such as bacon, cheese slices, lettuce, tomato and various sauces. In fact you can have a burger with everything plus chunk chips!

MichaelJH profile image
MichaelJHHeart Star in reply to Heythrop51

I will have a beef burger with bacon, cheese and all the trimmings please! It's great not having to carb count! :)

Alison_L profile image

Hello H. That reminds me, I've got a bowl full of home-grown tomatoes. Sorry, I should have mentioned those before you bought some! Please can I try all of your burgers, please, with all of the add-ons. Except lettuce. You can keep that. Far too healthy!

Heythrop51 profile image
Heythrop51 in reply to Alison_L

Do you want three burgers or a giant stack?

Alison_L profile image

Good afternoon even though it is not a Scottish holiday I thought I would join. I am need of an excuse to open the tequila and make a few margaretas orders are now being taken 🍸 also vodka Martinis shaken not stirred and for the gin lovers I have a selection including Glaswegin 😃 now we have passed the best bit! Nibbles consist of smoked salmon sandwiches, ham and cream cheese swirls, haggis bon bons, tempura prawns, pork pies and scotch eggs, (all calorie and fat free) miniature sherry trifles to finish. I hope you enjoy. Char x

Yoga2011 profile image

Afternoon T. Haggis bon bons? Haven't heard of those. Are they baby haggisses? I love to watch the wild haggis roaming free in the Highlands. We were up in Kyle of Lochalsh earlier this month. We stopped for a chat with Nessie on the way up there, and she told us that the wild haggis are doing really well now as there are so many vegetarians around these days. May I have some of your prawns, please, and a glass of Glaswegin would go down a treat. Hubby bought a bottle of Talisker to bring home, and I think there's a drop left if you fancy a wee dram.

Thanksnhs profile image
Thanksnhs in reply to Alison_L

They are the offspring of the hagis a bit more rounder, flourishing at the moment as the main haggis hunting seasons are January for Burns night and November for st Andrews day, although they can be eaten at any time. I hope Nessie was behaving herself as I believe there is another spot Nessie trip going on at the moment.A wee talisker will go perfectly with the haggis the Glenfiddich is very good as well. The gin is poured perfectly with ice and a slice. I hope you enjoy it. Char x

Alison_L profile image
Alison_L in reply to Thanksnhs

Mm, that's lovely, thanks. Nessie was fine. We found her sunbathing on some rocks just north of Fort Augustus. She'd bribed some trout to shoal together and create a fake monster up at Drumnadrochit so that she could have a rest.

GrannyE profile image
GrannyE in reply to Thanksnhs

I thought that Nessie thought Lomond was too crowded just at the moment and was away on holiday. she will be back next month when it has all quietened down.

Hi Michael I'm the same as Doglover, get notifications hours after everyone else. Sorry I couldn't make the party, had been to a BBQ on Sunday. If I'd known earlier could have brought some cold sausages over. Could also have brought runner beans, cucumber and toms for the salad from the garden.I've got Zoom book club tonight at 8.00pm and tomorrow it's a Zoom coffee morning. Lockdown wasn't all bad😊.

I've just made a huge pot of chicken curry and a huge pot of tomato and lentil soup. Does anyone want to save me the tedium of cooling them and ladling into containers for freezing?

I also have a few pain au chocolat left over from visitors the other day. It's the calorie, carb, and fat-free kind! 😉

MichaelJH profile image
MichaelJHHeart Star in reply to Ramilia

I have just made a coffee so a pain au chocolat would go well with that. A portion of soup for later would be good - here's my thermos. I will skip the curry as I don't like spicy food. What spices do you use as many hearties should avoid ones such as turmeric and ginger!

Ramilia profile image
Ramilia in reply to MichaelJH

Hi Michael,

I've filled your flask with soup. Pain au chocolat served!

Spices. Didn't know that about turmeric and ginger. I'm afraid I use both! Oops.

I use garam masala, ground cumin, turmeric, ground coriander and fresh coriander stalks (with leaves to garnish), chilli flakes and fresh chilli, fresh grated ginger, a couple of cloves and cardamom seeds.

Welb profile image
Welb in reply to MichaelJH

Michael love what you’ve done with the party. Why should hearties be careful of ginger and turmeric please as I eat both.

MichaelJH profile image
MichaelJHHeart Star in reply to Welb

They both enhance the action of blood thinners and anticoagulants. I was told turmeric was particularly dangerous although I imagine the supplements sold by health shops are far more dangerous than when used sparingly in cooking.

Hi everyone sorry I missed this party, what a great idea ! I have 2 reasons to miss it, only joined here last week so missed the memo lol, then spent my Bank Holiday 18 hrs in the JR emergency rooms again with a delicious cocktail of blood tests and litre of saline drip, savoury main course of cheesy vegetarian chest Xray, followed by a delicious dessert of contrast CT scan, getting home slightly stuffed and very tired having only slept for 2 hrs the previous night

But if yr mentioning scones well I have ancestry from both Devon and Cornwall so maybe I need double portions of cream and jam

Best wishes all

Ah, the peaty one! Enjoy your dram, Michael. I had my first glass of Laphroaig in a hotel in Stornoway in the late 1980s. Islay, of course, is nowhere near there for those who are a bit hazy about the geography of the Scottish islands!

I'll always remember going to the Outer Hebrides, and North Uist in particular, in 1986 for the first of many visits. I was astonished to find that the water from the taps was brown! Bit disconcerting, but peaty water tastes lovely.
