I am taking Clopidogrel and Atorvastatin following a stroke. I was wondering if anyone knows what joint supplements can be safely taken with these medications.

many thanks in advance!

Best asking a pharmacist, they'll be able to tell you interactions etc

That makes sense. Thank you for your reply, I appreciate it. 🙂

If the pharmacist says "none", which is I think likely, you could go natural instead of seeking supplements. For example, you could ensure you eat canned sardines once or twice weekly. Slap the entire can or half-can contents on top of some hot pasta or mixed rice/grains with a few olives/cherry tomatoes and some basil.

Canned sardines are packed with omega3, which helps joints as an anti-inflammatory. Try to get the cheaper canned versions with the bones left in, then you'll get the calcium as well, or get brislings which are whole, small and excellent for both calcium and omega3.

Canned sardines these days also come with some good flavouring too, such as lemon, herbal and spicy as well as the usual tomato.

Chondroitin is hard to source from food unless you're really into gristle. Glucosamine on the other hand can be found in bone broth such as Baxter's Super Good bone broth with mushroom and barley, if you don't fancy making your own broth at home.

Vitamins, minerals and essential amino acids are absorbed by the gut from food differently than from supplements. So, while it might no longer be advisable for you to swallow 1000mg of omega 3 in a single capsule, canned sardines containing approximately the same amount of omega3 should be perfectly acceptable, as long as these are part of a balanced and varied diet.

Happy eating and I hope this is useful info for you.

Try Tumeric with black pepper if your joints are sore, a good B Complex, I'm sure there are lots more. I had a heart attack last week and back on Clopidgral nobody mentioned coming off vitamins etc

You can't take turmeric if you are in clopidogrel. I was advised to take it by specialist surgical practitioner at hospital when I had appointment about my knee. Luckily I looked up on internet and as turmeric can lower blood clotting you can't take it if You are in antiplatellet or blood thinning drugs.

Interesting 🤔 I wonder if it's in your food would it still do the same?

I think in food you only use a small amount, not the quantities used in a pill.

I’ve taken both clopidogrel and turmeric for years! Never been told not to.

Hi. I’m in the same position as you. Take Clopidigrel after a stroke and have severe arthritis. Doc told me the only things I can use are topical creams such as Voltarol but to use sparingly. I actually have a stronger cream prescribed by the doc but only use it when I go out. Good luck!!

Thank you for that. It’s most helpful to hear about your experience. 😀

I have used Glucosamine with Chondroitin whilst taking these medications. I had an arthritis flare up. I would check with your GP/Pharmacist before taking any supplements.

Ah, that’s very interesting. Thanks for that and, yes, I’ll most definitely consult my doctor/pharmacist. Cheers! 😊
