NO! You should never take any supplements without consulting your cardiologist or GP. The only ones I have approval for are Vitamin C (reduces irritation in the blood vessels - think scurvy) and Vitamin D (prescribed as following blood tests my level was found to be 25% of normal).

Tumeric enhances the action of Aspirin and could cause a dangerous bleed! Are you on a PPI ((proton pump inhibitor) to protect your stomach?

be careful with turmeric and black pepper I have autoimmune and landed up with this constant cough. When talking to my RA nurse we checked what had changed and it was this that was causing the cough.

So check check check

Any supplements that genuinely have an effect may well react with your regular medication. As Michael says, don't take anything of this sort without consulting your doctor.

My cardiologist has approved my turmeric, but pharmacist said to make sure to use same strength, easier on tablet form, otherwise measuring could be incorrect. I use it for arthritis but as I'm on blood thinners it's on my medication list. But as others have said, please check first. Usually it will be red flagged on gp check list if not suitable, then cardiologist needs to approve it. Take care. Moni

Hi, thanks for that. I wonder what the dose was. I’ve been taking 700mg of turmeric and 10mg of black pepper in a capsule every other day for Hallux rigidus and it was completely rigid. After about 6 x months I can flex it up and down. I will investigate further. I have received several replies a couple of positive ones. This mode of getting help and support is brilliant. I feel very fortunate to be able to call on fellow members for help. Take care. 😉

Interesting I asked the pharmacist as wanted to make sure of interactions with heart meds as use nutmeg and cinnamon on my porridge she said not to use turmeric she said the spices I use are OK I wonder if she is right or not.

lived in India for 6 years and got used to the food there. I use turmeric, black pepper and ginger in my food cooked in the slow cooker about once a week. I also have Indian meals which are boil in the bag About every 2nd day. I've been doing that for about 3 - 4 years now without any problems

the levels of turmeric in a cooked meal are really quite low. But it does have anti platelet effect when taken at the higher levels seen in supplements so shouldn’t be taken unless agreed by your doctor/consultant. I’m a pharmacist

Also the saying that I’ve done x or y and I’m ok isn’t really medical data. People have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, high blood sugar sometimes for many years totally oblivious to the ongoing internal damage. That’s how people have HA and strokes apparently out of the blue. But they’re not unexpected once you know what’s been churning away in the background, often over many years

Culinary turmeric is far far weaker than that in supplements. I think you're safe to have a curry.... as long as everyone else in the house is having one! 😂

I take turmeric and black pepper, but only when I need it. I've read that it takes a couple of weeks to get into your system and have an effect, but it happens much quicker for me (as has been the case for many drugs that I've been prescribed), so I get relief from my knee and hip pain within a day or two. Then I can cut back on it and taper it off, often not needing it for weeks. It's just another weapon in my armoury against pain. 😀

I was taking turmeric each day with a host of other supplements to lower my cholesterol, my Dr. advices me to stop taking it as it is causing a lot of liver problems. Just an FYI Maybe check with your dr first.

Hi, thank you for information. Duly noted.

talk to your gp - I’ve been using it too (joint issues) but I’m experimenting with Ezetimbe asa statin alternative and the last blood test showed some liver irritation. As turmeric is now known to be possibly responsible for that, as is Ezetimbe, I’ve stopped the turmeric as an experiment
