I am on apixiban and have it in my head that turmeric as a joint supplement isn’t a good mix . Have I got this wrong?

turmeric with meds?
Hi Rob - there might be an issue.
There are some good online drug interaction checkers out there, and I think this one is helpful in outlining why there might be an issue: drugs.com/drug-interactions...
Best of luck - Julian
thanks julian - this confirms what I thought and this may be useful for others to know as well so apixiban users please take note
Yes , you were right to check turmeric and other curcumin supplements can effect platelets and aren't best suited in the form of supplements if you are on blood thinners .
thanks. Are you aware of other natural products with same sort of properties as turmeric that can be safely taken with apixiban?
It does depend what joint issues you are taking it for, whether you have any other illnesses or take other medications that effect which you can choose or which things you want to improve (stiffness, inflammation, strength, bone or tissue etc.)If you give some more info , I might be able to recommend something , but obviously , also check any recommendations against your medications again and check with your GP before you try them.
so I am on ramipril , apixiban and flurosimide re post aortic graft surgery, statin ( Astov) and two tablets for enlarged prostrate. My issues are hip and knee oestoparothis ( or however you spell it - basically arthritis) and joint stiffness all over!
Do you have any inflammation or pain as well?Have you had a Decade an to assess your bones?
Do you already take any supplements, either over the counter or prescribed ones?
Are you already taking part in any physiotherapy or recommended exercises?
I know , a lot of questions but it helps members to be able to give you more tips .
I have pain with the arthritis and a limp.
No bone assessment other than normal x ray
Take the supplement that is meant to help joints - gylc something.
Starting 16 week cardio rehab. But the joints issue is age related not heart related .
The 16 week cardio rehab will help reduce the stiffness in your joints and bring back some muscle strength and flexibility that you might have lost in post heart op recovery.Do make them aware when you go that you also suffer from oestoarthritis and which joints they are in so they can advise you to adapt what you do to prevent pain kicking off and making what you manage harder or less consistent.
They should also be able to suggest some weight bearing exercises for your joints to do at home suitable for your point in recovery. Things like walking , any type of cycling including exercise bikes , exercise in water can create slow and steady improvement in stiffness in the joints.
I find warming the joints by doing some gentle stretching or having a warm shower before I go helps with improving my movement and stiffness .
Drink water both before and during exercise and afterwards and cool down your joints by again doing a few gentle stretches and having a warm shower.
To be honest , I tried Turmeric for years . It actually made a big difference to my IBS but no difference to my joint pain or stiffness at all and had no effect on joint inflammation. Seeing comments from many people and different forums suffering with various types of Arthritis they found the same.
If you don't mind finding out what the full name of your Glyc supplements and the names of your prostate drugs , I will check list for them and the reply again, including if there are any additional oral supplements or lotions it might be worth trying , but obviously you have a few health things banging heads and you also need to be sure you can take certain supplements or use creams without it interacting with your prostate treatment as well as your heart.
There's quite a few things you should avoid under prostate care as well.
I don't know about turmeric and apixiban, but I know you shouldn't take it whilst on clopidogrel. Which was a bit disappointing for me as it was recommended when I went for ortho appointment re getting knee replacement. Glad I looked up on counteractions with clopidogrel before I went and bought it. I would look up on your drug info and see what it says
As long as you don't have a pace maker you may benefit from wearing a magnet in the form of a bioflow bracelet, I swear by them, but, sadly can't wear mine anymore x bioflow.com/pages/about-mag...
