Blood test results

Hello everyone

So my husband's gp surgery called about his blood tests , saying there ate abnormalities in his full blood count and hbc1.

The admin wanted him to book an appointment with his nurse and he got one for next Wednesday.

My question is, is there any other way to get a reading on the results? Or we just have to wait?

I can't help but be worried.

I guess he could ask for a call back from a GP to explain the abnormality, If you meant a HbA1ctest this is primarily used to test blood/glucose levels over the last 2/3 months so I wonder if he has given a high/low reading so he may be diabetic or there are issues with his pancreas.They don't seem to be in a rush to see him and I know in my surgery the nurse practitioner deals with diabetics.

It may be he is pre-diabetic so they want to talk about diet (low carbs etc) but I understand your concern, so ring back and ask firstly the receptionist as to why he has to see the nurse, if not satisfied then speak to a GP.

Easy to say, but try not to worry. there may be nothing serious at the end of it.

Thank you Heather1957 We also thought it may be pre diabetic. But he has improved his diet considerably, hence the worry.

Yes you are right. I will try not to worry. He says he will wait till Wednesday. Got to respect his wishes I suppose 🤣

It can be so frustrating when they just give you half the story, calling someone in can cause a huge worry. Has your husband got access to a monitor to test his blood/sugars, doing a test may give him an idea what is going on.Positive vibes for Wednesday. x

I hope they have been calibrated but to be honest as long as the battery has charge they are usually okay.Rather than buy one, if you wait until Wednesday and they do think it is blood/sugars ask for one, it is the strips they are reluctant to prescribe as they cost so much.

I just wondered if you could take a test before his appointment it would prepare you a little.

You can buy them, look online and consider what price the test strips etc are you should be able to get one for about £15.I did exactly this when my HBA1C came back as pre-diabetic a few years ago. I paid under a tenner. I think it may have been Accu chek but I'm not sure, and I can't remenber where I put it.

Hi you can try the NHS app where you can see your own records. There was a post on this recently. I can see my blood test results. You will need to ask your surgery for a letter so can log on.

I applied for detailed records' access. This takes time to be processed apparently.

I have access to general records on my app at the moment.

You are lucky as this facility is not available to anyone outside England. I live in Wales and our app doesn't give us the same access.

While you are waiting for the appointment, you could just ask them to tell you which reading/s are out of range and by how much. This should provide a strong clue as to what the problem is.

Do you have the NHS app, the results usually get put on there.

So sorry to hear about your worries. If you have patient access through your GP you can view the blood tests along with anything else in yours and your husband's medical records.

I pop in and ask on reception then they look up the test.They will print them off if I'm lucky.

In Rotherham South Yorkshire we have Rotherham health app is like nhs app but is for gp and can view test results done at your gp but if done at hospital they don’t go on there was useful for me when I first started having blood tests but now all done at hospital

Sorry you have this worry now until Wednesday next week. I do think they could have given you a bit more information or maybe had the nurse phone to explain what the abnormality is. Imaginations do tend to run riot and GP surgeries could do better in sharing this kind of information. Having said this it's probably something minor so try not to worry.

I was thinking to call on Monday and ask. But that would undermine my husband somehow I feel.

I will have to wait till Wednesday.

You can see test results quite quickly in the NHS app or Patient Access app in England. If tests results are missing and you have these apps just ask the surgery to activate them. I have found my results within 48 hours of tests and ahead of Dr's phone call.

Hey guys. So I managed to find out that it is indeed prediabetic that he is.

The amount of lactulose prescribed to him might be the cause I think

Does any one know what else he can take? Senokot did not work.
