CBD PATCHES! (LEGAL)

Margie21 profile image
62 Replies

Hi, has anyone out there tried CBD patches (legal ones). I have a lot of pain in area of left hip, had several xrays and scans and have diagnosed with age related arthritis, bulging discs and have mobility problems. I have just been to a multiskeletal MSK clinic and have been assessed and told to lose weight and get more excercise and keep taking the tablets!!!! C0-codamol 8/500 and that also causes constipation and more or less just get on with it. It is very painful to walk far and difficult to lose weight. I have read that CBD patches could be the answer but worried about taking them because I have high blood pressure (controlled by medication) Felodopine 2.5mg and worried the patches may affect my blood pressure. I have also had Amatryptaline offered by my GP and they zonked me out like a zombie!! I am really fed up with the pain and hoping someone on here may have tried the CBD patches,

Forgive the spelling mistakes.

As a non medic I would think you might find hydrotherapy helpful.I had sciatica for several years...the screaming variety....where I screamed often due to the pain. Nothing else much worked although some physiotheray was also useful. The best type of hydrotherapy is working at first with a physio. and then doing exercises in the pool without the physio. Mosthospitals have a pool but you will need a referal from your doctor. In my case it came from a hospital consultant.

Thank you very much for your info and reply...my local hospital pool closed because of Covid and waiting list for physio is almost impossible to get onto list. I have tried acupuncture and joined a Fit Club but that closed because of lack of funding. Thank you anyway.

Hi,I’m a 54 year old lady who had heart bypass surgery 5 months ago. I’m still struggling with nerve & muscle pain across my chest. I’ve been using this for 10 days & I do think it’s making a little difference. It maybe a placebo effect I’d definitely give it a go.

Hello Margie21,

I am sorry you are living with so much pain in your life.

I would discuss using CBD (Cannabidiol) with your GP.

The CBD can interact with other medications.

The use of CBD has not gone through the same quality control or safety checks that prescription medications have gone through.

I also have a long term pain condition too. My angina is resistant to treatment.

I have hip pain, put down to wear and tear along with an inflammation of the tissues around the joint.

I can't take non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs.

I use exercise, perhaps try swimming as it's non weight bearing.

I also attend a yoga class weekly.

For my pain, I use hotwater bottles and a TENS ( transcutaneaous electrical nerve stimulator) machine. Ask your Physiotherapist team about using a TENS.

If you have a pacemaker you need to check with your Cardiologist if you can use a TENS machine.

I also attended a Pain Management Programme which I found helpful. Perhaps ask your GP to refer you.

Thank you for all your help and info, I did mention CBD to my GP and he gave it a thumbs down and suggested gabapentin for nerve pain......I have not tried it yet! worried about the side effects. I will ask about Pain Management Programme thank you. I am also looking into local Tai Chi classes, I have had a course of acupuncture and did not find it that helpful. Will lookinto buying a Tens Machine, I do not have a Physio Team, fully booked for months ahead.Thank you once again.

👍

MilkfairyHeart Star in reply to Margie21

I was offered Gabapentin and declined.

I still have pain, however I have by using Cognitive behavioral therapy learned to responded to my pain in a way that turns the ' volume down' on my pain.

Imipramine just flattened all my feelings, as you say zombified me.

You still have the pain, you just can't be bothered to complain!

I also attend a Tai Chi class.

Unfortunately the provision of Pain Management Services can be mixed. There is sadly very little research into this area of medicine.

I also used this app which may help. You can try it for free for a month.

I just would like a painkiller that will not have mega side effects !!! not a miracle cure ! Thank you once again for your help.

30 years of fibromyalgia; 20 years nerve pain and 11 months unbearable electric shock type pain down legs from a vertebra that's slipped out of line and still absolutely no help from pain clinics or doctors except the opiates I was given 20 years ago by a hospital pain team which they are now trying to reduce by giving yet more meds like amitrip which just make me suicidal and CBT where I ended up teaching her how to live with screaming pain. Well I guess that's one way to get rid of the pain.

Hi there. I went through a few, including the ones you have mentioned. I settled on Pregabalin (and paracetamol). Mine in nerve pain but not in the chest.Best of luck. X

Hi, my Dad is 80 has has recently started using the patches as he couldn't seem to space the oil around all his meds The patches don't interact with other medication, they don't bypass the liver. They have been fantastic. He has high BP, heart poems severe gout, his symptoms have improved and he has much more energy. I also got my mum on the patches, who has more energy.

Could you provide some research evidence for your comment below?

I suggest you discuss the possible interactions with a pharmacist.

Hi, the facebook group simply cbd user support told me, I can't remember all the details but if you want to join it is very good. My mum and dad's gp is very happy with the patches, my dad has reduced his cocodomol intake

Kathyboard1 profile image
Kathyboard1 in reply to Kathyboard1

Just to add, the gp wasn't so keen on the cbd oil because of interactions with his BP meds, something to do with an enzyme called p450 but cbd patches, no problem.

Hubby has osteoarthritis in his right hip and knee, he was told they wouldn’t operate yet as he wasn’t having any problems sleeping! After having a telephone appointment with GP last week he was prescribed a chillie based cream to ease the pain as he can only tolerate paracetamol as painkillers. However, I am a great believer in Tiger Balm and found a lotion version which has helped with the pain. Worth a try.

Margie21 profile image

Thank you, will def try Tiger Balm, good luck to your hubby, my GP gave me Voltarol Gel, it helps a bit but doesn't last long. Good luck.

Hi Margie, Just to let you know that there are two types of Tiger Balm, Red and White. The red is for muscles and the white is for use on the temples for migraines relief. When using the balm for the first time, do not over apply. Build up the layers on the skin until you find an amount that is heating the muscle but is not uncomfortable. Do not get it anywhere near your eyes as that is a whole new world of pain. Hope it helps and you find some relief.

Any success?

Living with chronic pain is awful.

I was fortunate as the Pain Management Programme I attended was helpful.

We certainly need more research into this neglected area of medicine.

Feldene helps a bit but needs several days to show and must be on fresh clean skin.

Tiger balm lotion is a clear liquid, we have only just discovered it. We have been using red and white versions for many years. The lotion is excellent and a little goes a long way.

Hi Margie , you sound like me , I was on codamol for years for pain I was sometimes taking up to 16 a day with very little effect apart from my bowels . Ask your doctor to change the codomal for tramadol plus paracetamol, so you take two tramadol and two paracetamol at a time . That’s what they gave me and although it’s not great it’s actually better than solfadol belive it or not . I have cbd by therabody it’s pretty strong see if you can get that online . Never take anyitriptaline or as the junkie call it trampoline because it leave you bouncing. I was on that about 15 years ago and weaned myself off it it’s very very harsh . Good luck darlin

Pain management is actually a very skilled speciality. I am under the joint care of the Pain Management Team and Cardiology when I am in hospital.

Tramadol is a medication that comes with significant side effects too. It is only available on prescription.

Don't get hooked on co-codamol (definitely give constipation) Amatryptaline are a no no too, spaced out! Go back to your doctor and ask for physio, exercise helps but it needs to be regular. Unfortunately there is no quick cure, having a similar problem, I've tried everything on offer but if you need to lose weight, as excess puts pressure on the pain, try water exercise. TENS machine did help a little as did relaxation. I'm going to try the CBD patches and I'll let you know if they help. Stay strong, gentle exercises, check your diet, I'm on low carb. Keep asking for help.

Interesting, I need to lose at least a stone in weight and from this week following a fruit/low carb diet , exercise is a nono just now as it is painful to walk and unfortunately I am not a waterbabe, It even hurts just to make my bed and hoover and do everyday things at the mo, please let me know how you get on with the CBD patches, Thank you and good luck.

ExPharmacy profile image
ExPharmacy in reply to Margie21

I'm not a water babe either! Lol I eat low carb but because I'm border line diabetic I can only eat 2 pieces of fruit a day, I've mainly cut right back on bread, potatoes, pasta, eating more veg, no biscuits, crisps, cakes, except weetabix cake which I make and portion off for breakfast occasionally. I know pain is terrible but even sitting on a chair moving arms or legs, lying down and gently moving legs and knees up and down, every little helps as well as drinking plenty of water. I'll certainly keep you informed if I come up with anything useful and on the CBD too. Stay safe and keep active, even if only a little, have a great day!

Hi.. I hear you around exercise being difficult. I am 70 years old and in constant pain especially when walking because of spinal stenosis. AVR + triple by pass 18 months ago. Still have frozen shoulders since operation. I just could not manage exercise it was to painful I found I could move my legs up and down vertically but I cannot walk moving forward it hurts to much after 5mins or so. But I can cycle because I only have to move up and down. I would not be able to manage a normal cycle but I have found an e-cycle is almost like getting new legs and can go places that I had given up on but now can enjoy country paths. it may not be for you but I thought I would mention it.

Margie21 profile image
Margie21 in reply to joel132

Thank you Joel, I have very similar problems to you and also spinal stenosis, will think about cycle therapy, I have a small folding cycle and will get it out of hibernation and dust it off and maybe with this lovely weather give it a go. Thank you and good luck to you.

Have you thought about trying pilates. I too suffer with an arthritic hip and sciatica. The consultant recommended pilates rather than meds. It has helped so much and I have very few sciatica related spells, the hip pain is reduced and I have much more mobility.

Thank you so much for your helpful reply Santozi Re: CBD patches, I have read that it could interfere with my BP and I take Felodopine MR 2.5mg x 1 daily and it keeps my BP at a near normal level with little side effects. I am talking to my GP today about CBD patches and other pain medication.....I am hesitant to try the CBD Patches but more hopeful since your reply, the ones I have been sent contain 480mg CBD isolate and made in the UK. I would appreciate your thoughts on this and thank you once again.

Thank you.

I know that the medication that I take for my heart condition has been tested for safety and effectiveness.

The article you have provided does not provide such evidence for CBD. All products will have side effects. .

It seems to be from a group supporting the use of CBD so not an unbiased source.

For me there is also the issue of the other components of the product are also untested and could cause problems.

I asked my GP about the same thing. I've been on opiates for 20 years and need to reduce the amount b ut he said he couldn't advise CBD because not enough is known about its effect on the heart. If I hadn't had a heart attack he would probably have said go a head. I now have spinal listhesis as well as DDD and can't walk except bent over in half; waiting for surgery. For arthritis I found a TENS machine helped a lot. All they seem to have to offer is stuff like gabapentin which makes me suicidal and amitryptilene which makes me like a zombie. I was even refused cardiac rehab because I couldn't walk.

Margie21 profile image

I am so sorry to hear about your problems, like you I am not a fan of opiods that make you like a zombie, wish you better health soon. Good wishes to you X

Qualipop profile image

No problems at all from opioids except constipation and the fact that they become less effective and have to be increased over time and doctors just don't have anything to replace them with.

I have tried CBD for my chronic pain, hip, neck, back and leg and it really didn’t work. Better off spending the money on a good physio in my opinion. If you do go the CBD route then ask the advice of a pharmacist.
