Ramipril for high BP

I recently went to hospital following a funny turn and spike in my blood pressure. I’ve been told my blood pressure was high before but stupidly didn’t do anything about it. The hospital thought I may have had a stroke, I’ve been sent for blood tests, had a heart monitor and waiting for a heart scan. I’ve been out on Nifedipress which was fine but now my doctor has introduced Ramipril with a view to get me off the Nifedipress. Since taking ramipril my blood pressure has become very temparmemtal and I feel really spaced out and horrible. Looking at my recent BP is looks like it’s going up since the dose was increased!! Is this possible?? Also I’ve put on weight! I’d really appreciate someone else’s experiences.

I don't know if this will be of help to you but here goes. I too experienced some very weird awful funny turns on a couple of occasions before going to the GP where it was discovered I have high blood pressure (which had been creeping up for a couple of years or more) Given this and my family history of strokes and heart conditions my GP put me on Ramipril. This was over 6 months ago and I have to say apart from bringing my BP down successfully initially on Ramipril I felt a bit light headed and had a tickly annoying cough. I decided to persevere for a while and now I have no side effects. Maybe just try a little longer but in the meantime mention side effects to your GP.

Thank u! I can deal with the side affects and persevere as the main thing is to bring my blood pressure down but since my go increased the dose my bp is higher?! Not sure whether my body just needs to get use to it and I’m stressing myself out over which isn’t helping but surely it should be better?! X

It may be that you will need a different class of BP drug added to your ramipril. Have you had a 24 hour BP test done?

You also need to decrease your weight and ensure you are getting enough exercise.

Hiya, I’m also on Nifedipress which the hospital gave me but my gp wants to take me off that as it’s quite an old medicine. I’m slightly over weight for my liking but my doctor says my weight is perfect?! Very confused!

I had a funny do with Palpitations and was taken off to Hospital overnight and put on a monitor till my heart went back into Sinus rhythm and sent home the next day with Apixaban (anticoagulant) and Ramipril along with my usual BP tablets. I found the Ramipril gave me palpitations and made me feel awful, I went to see my GP who promptly took me off them.

Did she put you on something instead? X

No, I was already taking a BP tablet called Metoprolol so she was happy to let me continue with that along with the Apixaban and I take a Statin as well at night. Having a problem with the Metoprolol at the moment as the Pharmacies can`t get it so I`ve now been put on Propranolol instead. Been taking them a week and my BP is better on them but have to get it checked by the Surgery next week.

Hi, I was on ramipril and felt ok for the first couple of weeks, the it started....I got so bloated at night...and had a lot of discomfort top left side, I read about side effects and one of them was that ramipril can cause inflamation of the pancreas, gp told me to stop taking them, the bloating and pain have gone but it took a few weeks...if you feel bad while taking them go back to your gp as there will be something else that you might tolerate better...good luck

Thanks craftbella. I’ll give my gp a call tomorrow . Worried about my no rising and not happy with the weight gain! I’m hardly eating to try and compensate but it’s doing nothing at all! X

could it be that the pills are causing fluid retention, hence the weight gain....

I am also on Ramipril but haven't had the same side effects. If you are feeling woozy you should inform your gp.
