Heart medication and CBD oil

Hi - prior to my heart attack and stent placement I took CBD oil on a regular basis - 2-3 drops twice daily. I did sone research, joined a CBD group and am now a member of the admin team.

Whilst taking CBD I was able to stop my pain meds and tapered and eventually came off my anti-depressant medication too.

I stopped taking CBD after my HA/Stent as I was unsure what was safe to take and what wasn’t - now 4 months post HA my mental state leaves much to be desired, my arthritis pain has come back and am now on max dose co-codamol. I’m reluctant to go back on anti depressant meds and not happy taking so many pain meds- is there anyone here who has continued using CBD post HA? I’m reluctant to call me GP as he seemed fairly ambivalent the last time I raised the subject.

Many thanks

Susan

Hi Susan,A bit of a tricky one here isnt it? before my HA i was reading up on CBD oil and of whether I could take it or not. I spoke to both my gp and pharmacist, and both said it was not a good idea. I didnt take it. Now, post HA it is most definitely not recommended!!!! please dont take my advice though as this was what i was told. you need to make up your own mind as we are not allowed to give advice here.

If you felt much better with CBD why don't you give it a try? After all it is natural. CBD won't help you on cardiovascular problems but on those you managed already before your HA. And watch yourself carefuly if something is different.

For many years my son takes CBD against seicures though some doctors are saying it may conflict with his pills...

Thank you for getting back to me. I’m pleased your son is processing well with CBD.It certainly helped me with my depression and arthritis - I’m seriously thinking that I’d like to go back on CBD to help my mental health and arthritis pain which has come back with a vengeance since I stopped taking it after my heart attack! I didn’t want to take chances with my heart but I think it may be more an issue of whether it clashes with the meds?

Since CBD (oil) fights inflammations (arthritis) it can also be of benefit on the inflammation of the heart. But it can clash with blood thinners, so it is not easy to decide. Anyhow if you restart take low doses at the beginning and look for sideffects.

See my reply to Qualipop - I've decided to go back to using CBD pain patches . . . they can't be any worse than taking 8 opiates every day.

I'm in constant pain despite high doses of opiates and really wanted to try CBD. My GP is very much in favour of CBD but advised me not to take it purely because not enough research has been done into its effect on the heart.

I have decided to use CBD pain patches - I've used them before and was actually wearing a couple when admitted to hospital - no-one questioned them then, so Im going back to using them . . . . they only release a very samll amount of CBD, no THC and I'm reasoning that it can;t be worse for the heart than swallowing 8 opiates a day!

Good point. I didn't know you could get patches although one of my many allergies is to glue on plaster s etc. I will investigate

I suggest you discuss taking CBT oil with your Cardiologist or GP.

Just because something is percieved as being natural doesn't make it safe.

I also live with alot of pain in my life too.

I researched CBT oil and I didn't feel there was enough evidence to show that it would be safe for me to take.

I am not sure whether it is appropriate to suggest to people living with heart conditions that they should take any substance that has not gone through the same safety trials as conventional medications.

This includes drug interactions.

It is something we should perhaps discuss with a healthcare professional such as pharmacist, Cardiologist or GP so we can make a shared evidence based decision?

Absolutely- it certainly wasn’t my intention to encourage others, rather to see if anyone had used it after HA as I was a little unsure about what to do myself and was interested in learning others experiences
