Hi everyone, looking for advice please. I’ve recently been diagnosed with high blood pressure and I fear the GP will want me to take more tablets, on top of the Bisoprolol I already take for my AF. My BMI is good apparently, and I already exercise regularly and eat healthily, although I’d like to lose a bit of weight.. I’d love to know if anyone has any tips for getting blood pressure down. A relative swears by Black Seed Oil, which I confess I’d never heard of till now. Has anyone tried it, and if so with what success?

Black Seed Oil for high blood pressure?
Dear Outsidethelines
So sorry to hear that you find yourself with higher blood pressure that is normal for you.
You must find out from the person that diagnosed this, to what maybe causing it, the best way to treat your illness and what the prognosis is with or without the drugs that they may prescribe you.
A few outside influences may help with bringing your BP back into line and it seems that you are already exploring them, your wish to lose weight is one you should chase especially if that weight is new to you.
Please do not reach for anything that could do you more harm than good, the world is awash with snake oil sales persons feeding off our fear.
People so easily dismiss known drugs for so called over the counter herbal/natural ones that have been more processed and remain untested fully.
If you are interested in exploring a more natural approach to your health care then your Dr can recommend a registered practiser in your area.
Take care.
I am hypertensive, it wasn't taken seriously for years, especially when I was caring for my mother. It did return to acceptable levels then rose sharply 3 years ago. I was given Ramipril which didn't suit me then after a second admission to A&E was prescribed Perindopril which has been a game changer for me. I absolutely loathe taking medications and have weird reactions to many, but I feel so much better taking this. High BP is usually considered to be silent, but I always know if mine is raised.Anything you take alongside Bisoprolol needs to be cleared with your doctor to rule out interactions. You would often find that a medicine prescribed by a doctor is likely to be safer than a supplement as it's subject to more regulation and more stringent testing.
Hello there. Yes Black seed oil! The 'cure all'. The arabs swear by it that i used to work with. Its been used for thousands of years. Its in the koran as being the miracle cure.
Anyhow i had used this first in Iraq when i had tummy issues for over a month and my friends said to try some actual seeds. Within days it went away. I have been using this for years now. A tea spoon a day. When i caught covid i double dosed, i beat it in 3 days whilst everyone around me took a week. I blame the oil. Studies done on this proven it beats colds, flu and covid!
To answer your question yes it can lower blood pressures too! There's many natural ingredients we have in the kitchen that can help keep bp lower. It probably is best to check with the doc if your bp lowering meds are ok to take with foods like black seed oil..
Last time I tried to reply on something outside my immediate experience range, I tripped up and got firmly put back in my box… so very tentatively I’m venturing out again! Apologies if this is obvious and unnecessary.
You say your diet is pretty healthy. However, you might wish to look closely at salt and see if you can eliminate as much as possible as it is not good for blood pressure.
The amount added to shop bought bread , ready meals, processed foods etc is quite surprising. It isn’t just about avoiding crisps and stopping adding salt to water for vegetable cooking, though those are easy changes.
Best wishes
Reduce salt as JeremiahObadiah has said and reduce body weight as you have already indicated are positive steps which will help lower your BP, and something to be taken into consideration when you sit down with your GP. Next my personal view on supplements is to avoid. But since we don't know by how much your BP is elevated, and whether meds are recommended or not really means that any further comments are premature in my view.
i have no experience of Black Seed Oil and have never heard of it - but make sure you check with your pharmacist before taking any decision, they should be able to advise on any likely interactions with prescription medication
I was very reluctant to take any anti-hypertension medication when it was first offered - after an episode of Takotsubo (go ahead and google it!) these were prescribed as part of the treatment - I decided that I should continue to take them, but got fed up when my increasing BP meant they wanted me to take more
I saw a very helpful cardiologist who explained that it is often more effective to give small doses of 2 anti-hypertensives instead of increasing the dosage of one - also that different combinations might have to be tried to get the right combination
just the fact that she took the time to answer my questions and explain was really helpful - I accepted her advice, took the pills - later I managed to increase my activity levels and lose some weight, this has brought my BP down to normal levels and I am taking less medication
All to say, sometimes you just have to keep taking the pills - good luck
I don't know how effective black seed oil is in reducing blood pressure. I believe it has various protective properties that are beneficial. Best to do some research before you come to a conclusion. I don't, as far as I know, suffer from high BP but I have been taking a teaspoon a day for my general health for the last few months, combined with porridge, grapefruit and regular exercise (walking) and I certainly haven't suffered any ill effects. A small bottle of black seed oil costs around £5 and lasts about 3 months
Hi, can I suggest you track down what is actually causing your BP to be high?I have never heard of black seed oil and don't know how it works.
You are doing all you can to reduce BP but do be aware it can be caused by secondary rea sons outside of your control.
I wish I'd researched why my BP was so high instead of being dismissed by my GP..I too had a good bmi,ate well and exercised, never smoked and rarely drank alcohol but I couldn't reduce my BP on this alone,Ramipril,Candesartan, Propranolol and Amlodopine didn't really help.
Turned out to be an endocrine disorder causing high hormones to be produced and needing referral to an endocrinologist for specialist treatment.
I take Black Seed oil for general health.
Ok seven things I suspect you’re not doing….
1. Buy blood pressure monitor and take BP every morning and evening.
2. Have a strict routine to ensure maximum quality sleep
3. Follow the DASH diet
4. Cut out caffeine. Do intermittent fasting, restricted time feeding and one meal a day
5. Monitor and improve waist:height ratio
6. Have a PLAC test done just to check cholesterol
7. Do yoga and plenty of walks in nature - whatever the weather. Take an audiobook perhaps.
Hi Paul, thanks for your reply. I’ve moved on a lot since posting that question. I’m no longer hoping for a quick fix for either my raised blood pressure or my PAF. I did buy some black seed oil to try but couldn’t bear the taste, and in my book anything my body utterly gags at can’t be good for me. Apart from that, I’ve lost 6kg in weight and my BMI and waist height ratio are now exemplary. I do yoga classes and ‘green’ walks nearly every day, prioritise sleep, have cut caffeine intake down to two cups of tea a day, given up all alcohol, eat a Mediterranean diet within a 12-hour daily window, stopped work to reduce stress… and still my BP remains stubbornly high and my episodes of AF are getting ever more frequent! Any more ideas? I’m on the list for an ablation next spring, if all else fails.
You’ve done loads but I don’t see regular BP monitoring…. Meditation/prayer? Breathing exercises? Sleep routine? Also if you’ve stopped work then maybe voluntary work for feel good reasons? I don’t see you’ve had the PLAC test either. If you do ALL those especially the monitoring then I’d certainly not wait until spring for the ablation. Are you not on BP medication? It SEEMS the problem is stress so maybe distraction would help - hence the voluntary work, the routine and the breathing exercises.
