Nearly time for me to come off my blood thinner. 12 month post MI. One stent. Wondering whether to expect any reactions. Is it a gradual stopping of the medication or will it be stopped straight away.

Hi my experience (twice) once with Ticagrelor and the other Clopidogrel was that both were stopped immediately the year was up. No gradual easing down just stopped with no bad effects.😁

I just stopped after 12 months. No side effects at all. On the positive side the level of unexplained bruising I experienced improved within days of stopping. It's a good medicine - definitely does what it says on the box!

I was taking Asprin and clopidogral after having 3 stents fitted nearly 3 years ago , I stopped clopidogral after a year but was told to carry on with the Aspirin which I did for18 months then it caused problems had to stop it , so I’m back on clopidogral no problems but reading some of the reply’s to your post I’m wondering why I’m still being advised to take them

JennyRx profile image
JennyRx in reply toRhinet34

Probably because you’re not on aspirin. You need at least one antiplatelet. The Ticagrelor or clopidogrel are added to aspirin - known as dual antiplatelet therapy - for a year post stenting to keep the stent open. After that it’s usually to just continue with aspirin as an antiplatelet. But if you can’t take aspirin then you would continue with another single antiplatelet

Yes I realised after I’d asked , thank you for your reply I appreciate it

Recently stopped on my 1 year anniversary, no problems at all. The only problem I had while on it was 3 nose bleeds ( suffered with them on & off since childhood), 2 required medical intervention to stop them. So as previously mentioned, it did it's job

I stopped after a year, and was a little concerned about just stopping. But didn't have any issues or aide effects. The bruising stopped which was good.

Good morning,

I stopped mine a few months ago and haven't had any problems.

Cheers,

Stopped Ticagrelor after 11 Months. I had suffered a nose bleed that would not stop and required a hospital intervention. Medical ward doctors agreed with cardio that was best. No side effects from stopping the Ticagrelor and bruising cleared up quickly.

I’m due to come off anti platelets, feel similarly concerned .

Hello,Fingers crossed I'm due off same in May after HA and one stent.I'm supposing GP/Cardiologist gives permission for this? Please let us know how you get on

Thanks.

JennyRx profile image

It will be on your notes at GP to discontinue it. So you just stop reordering your prescription. There’s very little ceremony about it ending.

I was on a clinical trial after my stents and ticagelor was on of the meds I was on. It was just stopped with no side effects. There was, however, a good side - far less bruising!!

After having 2 MI & 3 stents I’ve been on Ticagrelor since November 2019 came off for one month at the 12 month anniversary of my MI but docs advised to me to carry on for a further 12 months ! Only side affects brushing Came on and off and back on Ticagrelor with no issues or side affect great drug

I have been on Ticagrelor since May 2019, first year 90mgs twice a day, then 60mgs twice a day until May 2022. I had 2 NSTEMI with one stent, did a bit of research on continuing with ticagrelor and discussed with the cardiologist who agreed for me to continue for a total of three years. Won't miss the bruising though.

i stopped recently as well and was worried about side effects but glad to report there have been no issues.

I’m pleased to read so many have had no side effects coming off because I’ve felt a bit poorly after stopping the Ticagrelor.

I had four stents inserted just over a year ago and adapted well to all the meds with a few side effects. However since stopping the blood thinner I’ve had muscle pains, occasional chest pains, lethargy and light headedness. My blood glucose is also raised. I’m pushing through it and gradually getting better. I’ve kept up my exercise regime.

Like almost everyone has already posted: no side effects from coming off after a year other than the very favourable one that the bruising stopped! Incidentally I also came off Lansoprazole (as advised by the consultant). I remain on aspirin, ramipril, felodpline, atorvastin (and GTN as very rarely required).

I'm the opposite with the meds plan. HA in July 2020 and have been on Rivaroxaban and Clopidogrel since, also Aspirin for the first six weeks. Also the usual betablockers and inhibitors. Barts Heart Centre now wants to drop Rivaroxaban and Clopidogrel and replace with Tricagrelor (2 x a day) and Aspirin. Apparently this provides better protection against future furring of my coronary arteries. The current mix of Rivaroxaban and Clipidogrel also does this but also protects against an aneurysm - which they are satisfied I'm not at risk from after reviewing my last MRI. I've had no side effects from the current cocktail, so hopefully same when it gets switched out. Unless others here have had problems going on to Tricagrelor after previous meds? Just have to trust what the experts tell me, and now waiting for the GP to sort out the new prescription.

Hi. No problems when I stopped. If you’re on a PPI (like Lansoprazole) to protect your stomach you might want to ask the Doc about coming off that as well as adults can normally tolerate the Aspirin.

Mine just stopped and somewhat to my surprise I didn't drop dead on the spot ;-). Immediately had more energy and a lot less bruising, but I also put on weight.

I had no issues but was very glad to stop bruising so easily

I’m one year next week since my HA and have a drug review with my cardiologist. I have had on going chest tightness and stomach aches for the past past year due to the swag of drugs that I am on. Hoping that coming off the Clopidogrel and PPI (Pantopanzole) will help but keep going with Aspirin, ACEI and Statins. I will let you know !

Hello. I’m on a trial - had a MI and stent May 2019 took 90mg Tiglagador for a year now taking 60mg until May 2022. The bruising goes away with a little arnica. Although the ones on the back of my hands always look the worst! Make the most of coming off it. No side effects here.

Stopped 6 months post mi and three stents. Kept bleeding too much, even finger nails sometimes would cause bleeding. Which is difficult as I'm a professional pianist. I had to miss every 4th note!!
