ticagrelor or Plavix?

hi everyone, was wondering if anyone has had any bad side effects with ticagrelor 90mg was thinking of changing it to Plavix. Thanks

Hi there. Yes I get pretty bad chest pains on ticagrelor. I spoke to my cardiologist who doubled my lansoprazole and changed me to coplidogrel. I lasted 1 week on coplidogrel but they made me feel really poorly , sick, dizzy, headaches, heartburn, muscle pain and I couldn't function so I'm back on ticagrelor and back with the chest pains.

thanks for the reply, im on ticagrelor now you've got me worried lol might just stick to it was going to change to Plavix but not sure what to do.

I know, you might be ok though. I've not heard of Plavix. I guess the worst that can happen is you'll change back. Why are you considering the change?

I have bad headaches nausea and feel light headed some times.

Hi my dad was on this for 3 months after a quadruple by-pass in Feb 2020. Because of lockdown he’s had no rehab whatsoever. He was really breathless, tired etc. Consultant changed his medication and put him on Clopidogrol (sorry about the spelling) and he’s been brilliant since. I would 100% ask your GP/consultant for a review. Dad’s consultant said it’s 50/50 with Ticagrelor as it suits some people and doesn’t suit others.

I am on Ticagrelor and, for me, it can cause a bit of dyspnea and mild-moderate tightness across the chest, upper back, the throat (which is really annoying) and has made some joint pain worse (along with my statin)... oh, and obviously, it causes major stress if/when I cut myself

To be fair, a lot of these issues have become less severe over time but, notably, when I raised these issues with my cardiologist last year he said he'd "try to get me off it as soon as possible", i.e. he didn't try to convince me that I was imagining the issues or that they may be a result of something else.

I did switch to Plavix (Clopidogrel) at one point and was OK for a week before beginning to itch uncontrollably and eventually develop major hives down the length of my arms and legs. Hence, I am back on Ticagrelor and enjoying its side-effects - which I have more or less learned to live with.

As it happens, I could finish my original course of DAPT this month but I had another stent in January and should really keep it until the end of the year... there is mixed research on whether six-months is sufficient for a routine PCI. Decisions, decisions!

I had a terrible time when i was on ticagrelorAlmost blacking out on several occasions and wanting to urinate without being in control. Consultant changed my medication and said it is 50/50 on the side effects.

Apart from nicking myself while shaving and feeling like I was going to have to visit a blood bank after, or looking like I'd been severely beaten because of all the random bruises, I can't say I've experienced any other negative effects in the year that I was on it.

I'm not trying to be alarmist here and can only comment about my own personal situation, but I had a bdd experience with Ticagrelor. After taking it for 3 months it triggered/caused a significant internal bleed that put me in to hospital for three days. I was taken off it and put onto Clopidogrel as an alternative. That was a month ago. My understanding is that Clopidogrel has an even higher chance of causing internal bleeds, for those (like me) who are susceptible to them, so I am taking it, watching and waiting. Saying all of this I know a few people who are successfully taking these meds without suffering any adverse side effects whatsoever. I guess I'm just one of the unlucky ones in this case.

When asking a question like this you’re statistically way more likely to get replies from people saying YES I too have had problems.

So, for balance, I’ve been on Ticagrelor for five months with no problems, other than bleeding from cuts and from bruising.

Henry B, I too have been on Ticagrelor for nearly 6 months, prior to my HA I was on no medication, I don't even get bruises, just extra bleeding with cuts & grazes, no other side effects

Yes I have lots of pain in my guts and feel terrible on it! I dont do well with meds
