hospital prescribed meds

4 weeks ago i was admitted for angina and injury to kidneys.. whilst in hospital i was prescribed nicorandil and omaprazole.. the Consultant who prescribed the new meds was not a Cardiologist.. does anyone know if a Cardiologist would have been consulted on new meds before being prescribed?

Milkfairy.. 4 weeks ago.. 2nd admission in 10 weeks.. first time was up in Cardiology.. this time couple of nights in Medical ward as a clot was also involved.. on so many pills already i’m a bit cautious about heart related pills bring prescribed by someone other than Cardiologist.. i believe the Consultant who made the decision actually specialises in Respiratory Medicine

don’t think they’re the easiest people to contact lol.. but in your opinion would a Consultant in another speciality prescribe a heart related drug without getting in touch with Cardiology?

If you are unsure contact your GP and they should be able to discuss the issue with your Cardiologist

My own experience would be advice would have been sought. It might not have come from a cardiac consultant - quite often the first port of call between specialities is the on duty registrar, so the person the step below consultant - but it would have to be a supremely arrogant and ill advised doctor to do otherwise. It is slightly different, but I went into A&E with an episode of SVT requiring treatment and didn’t see anyone from cardiology for the 14 hours I was there, but they sought advice from the cardiac reg and altered my meds as a result.

This may be a reassurance, or it may not, but my daughter and I have been under 15 different specialities and had 60 odd hospital admissions between us, and for 6 years she had singularly THE most arrogant, unpleasant and borderline incompetent respiratory consultant I’ve ever encountered, but even he reached out to other specialities where appropriate. Begrudgingly, sometimes even with visible eye rolling, but he did do it.

thanks for that Charlie.. have an outpatient appt for Cardiology.. hopefully within the next few months.. will give me the chance to ask a few questions regarding medication.. just seem to be on quite a few pills at the moment

Hi.. I think there are no real worries there. Omeprazole is commonly prescribed to protect the stomach in heart patients, those taking Naproxen for arthritis, etc. It is one of a family of drugs called PPIs (Proton Pump Inhibitors). Nicorandil is an anti-anginal drug so it all seems sensible.
