Medication timing ?

I am taking bisoprolol together with a statin and aspirin my consultant tells me that this combination is the best to take for my palpitations and mild CHD. He says to take them at night all together but I am a bit worried about the beta blocker dropping my heart rate too low at night, also the statin can cause sleep problems, so I am a bit confused....I dont want to miss my meds but don't want to take a sleeping pill on top of these either......any thoughts please?

My bisoprolol is 7.5 mg taken for about 4 years always in the morning with other meds. I recently switched to taking it with the Statin in the evening and for a week I had constant headaches . I switched back to mornings and headache stopped.

I’ve recently (3 months ago) had surgery to have a combined Pacemaker / ICD fitted and was taking 3.75mg around 2pm. My consultant upped it to 5, but the effect on my quality of life was dreadful - really low energy nearly all the time. On agreement I lowered it back to 3.75 and can live with it, but as I was still getting tired in the afternoon, we’ve agreed that I take it at 6pm

I take Omeprazole first, and then Bisoprolol, Atorvastatin and Lisinopril half an hour later. This is before breakfast. After breakfast I take Aspirin and Vitamin C. This works for me.

Hi

I was advised Satins needed to be taken in the evening as that's when Cholesterol is made by the liver .

Taken at night thay works better

When I was on Simvastatin I took it in the evening. Because of some muscle aches I was changed to Atorvastatin and told I could take it with my other meds in the morning.

I see it gets complicated when we are all told different things

I'm on the same Statin

MichaelJH profile image

The PIL with Atorvastatin says it can be taken at any time. My GP said the main thing is to take it regularly.

Yes I was told that as well when I was changed to Astorvastatin from Simavastin before I had my bypass. I take it in the morning after my breakfast.

Atorvastatin can be taken in the morning. Check with your pharmacist.

Hi Michael. Our GP insisted Atorvastatin should be taken in the evening so me and hubby are following his advice! Dunno why!!!! xx

I work shifts so it's awkward for me.I take omeprazol bisoprolol and aspirin between the hours of 5am and noon then my statin around 10pm. I was told it doesn't matter what time you take them as long as you take them.x

Bisoporol, aspirin and statin at 6,45 a.m. then breakfast. Ramipril at 10 p.m.

in reply toCalliope153

My researchy type cardiologist told me to take statin in the morning. Which goes against the grain somewhat.

I am sure someone who knows will come in with the detail but the advice used to be take the statin at night because of the way the liver works. But then there is one statin that it doesn;t matter when you take it......

I take Bisoprolol(1.25 mg) and Ramipril(5mg) in the mornings and Atorvastatin (20mg) and Asprin in the evenings and have had no issues. However I note from the BBC news this morning that a major study in Spain has indicated that taking heart medication in the evening has higher benefits than taking it in the morning. So maybe I need to consult my GP about changing the routine to heart medication in the evening before bed and Statin and asprin in the morning after breakfast.

I take 1.25 Bisoprolol in the morning together with a baby asparin have done for nearly 3 years, I take losartan 50 mg and Rosavastatin 10mg at night. (As given to me in the hospital) These have just been increased.

I also take Ticagrelor 90mg morning and tea time.

I was told to take cholesterol medication at night as works on breaking down the bad stuff better.

Strange that we have all been given different advice. I was told to definitely take the statin at night because that is when the liver produces most cholesterol . Also advised can take the BP med at night to avoid dizziness/ light headedness during the day, which I do. The other things have been advised are that some meds e.g aspirin are best to take with or just after food & to try to work to every 12 hours between meds taken 2 x a day e.g Ticegrelor.

Hi, that's weird because I was told to take the beta blocker and aspirin in the morning, and statin at night. I googled for reasons, apparently the body works on the cholesterol at night so they advise taking the statin at night. In truth (my humble opinion), long term medication builds up the affects in the body, so morning, noon or night - what does it matter?

Like you, being new to this, I have been trying to decide the best way to take my medication. I have for the past 3 weeks been taking everything in the morning, but am, as of this evening, going to take them at night.

My reasons are that I seem to have more 'episodes' (or near misses) at night than I do during the day. I can't sleep either, so if I dose myself up, I can take a sleeping tablet without fear of needing medication.

Yeh, I also have all my problems only at night, which really affects my sleep .During the day everything is perfect...I am reluctant to go for a sleeping tab so have been trying nytol which is a strong antihistamine...this does give me better sleep, worth a try maybe.

Hi,mgs333, I was advised to take all meds in the morning, except for the statin which is taken at night, I have been doing this for over 12yrs now with no problem.

Advised to take statins at night for max effect. I decided o take asprin at night because I thought it might help me sleep, being a pain killer. I have made that up but it seems to work :-)

Post my triple bypass 3 months ago most of my drugs are now down to half their strength when I was released (and amiodorone has been dropped out completely).

My current dose, all as advised by cardiologist and thoracic surgeon is:

Morning after breakfast: 83mg of aspirin / 20mg clopidogrel / 2.5mg bisoprolol

Evening before sleep: 10mg statin

My side effects are:

Regular recurrences of short periods when I lose energy in the afternoon (will recur for 2-3 days and then disappear for maybe a week - no consistency)

Loss of libido and ability to maintain an erection. This was a real problem in my first month or two. Cardio said it was the bisoprolol doing that and to take sildenafil (always have done in recent years at 68yo now - still not good enough!). Actually when I dropped the amiodorone my libido etc got a noticeable instantaneous boost, but I'm still a bit off peak so to speak! Hoping that I can drop out the bisoprolol within the next 9 months. Meanwhile regular daily large glasses of broccolli smoothie helps - yes really! Large glass = actually more than 1 litre, but that includes pineapple, banana and sweet papaya.

[Sorry for the red herring with the last bit - we guys could probably have a long thread on that subject alone :-)]

A red herring as well !...not on top of the smoothie surely...

I suppose it would depend on where your resting heart rate usually is. I have a resting heart rate between 55-60 and was also worried about switching my bisoprolol to night time. I'm only on 1.25 and I tried it with my Fitbit. My HR drops to about 48 but from all accounts that is normal for sleeping. It has also reduced my day time dizzy spells.

Mgs333 profile image
Mgs333 in reply toglezz

Exactly the same as mine. 55-60 and 48 resting, all normal apparently.

I take my Bisoprol and the second Ivabradine in the evening. I found I was exhausted during the day if I took the Bisoprol in the morning.

I'm on all three. I take bisoprolol and aspirin in a morning and the statin at night. I'm also on ticagrolor twice a day and ramapril, which I take in the morning also. Oh forgot I take lanzoprazole an hour before breakfast. Thing that's it 😂

I take bisoprolol for Paroxysmal AF. I was supposed to take 1 in the morning and one at bedtime. Because my AF isn’t permanent, my heart rate is normal when I am not having an AF episode. This means when I took the Bisoprolol at night, my heart rate was going down to 45 and my BP plummeted too . I felt awful so I stopped taking the evening one and now just take the morning one. This stopped my heart rate plummeting though I still have episodes of AF so that is not under control but at least my heart rate isnt low at night. I did discuss this with my doctor and he was ok about what I was doing.

Hi,

I could not take my Bisoprolol at night, it gave me a whopping headache, which woke me up after I fell asleep. I had to stick to taking it in the morning.

Bisoprolol affects my vision, but I had been told, because of my age, and NICE guidelines there are no alternatives so I have to put up with it .

I take 80 Mg of Statin at night, I do have problems sleeping at night and usually wake at 04:00am, not sure why. If I sleep through some nights, I get horrific palpitations, and wake up anyway I can’t seem to win, so I just put up with it.

I have seen a cardiologist, which fitted a seven day holter, it showed I was having ectopic beats, he said it was not life threatening, it feels as if my chest wants to burst open, it’s really unpleasant .

I know there needs to be more research into this , because the comments on here are very similar in comparison , what’s been said is happening to lots of people.
