Insure and escape excellent
Be aware that if you get cover they may be restrictions. We once had the medical cover restricted to £10000, sounds a lot but in reality it's not.
£10,000 is nothing in reality. Last year I posted about a woman who had to be airlifted from a cruise ship and subsequently needed three stents - total bill in excess of £50,000. She was not insured! Nearly twenty years ago a friend's father required emergency OHS and a three week hospital stay in the US - the bill of around £100,000 was covered by insurance.
Been in the same situation a couple of times and each time the insurance company has insured us with the exclusion of the condition under investigation. Once, it was "trigger" finger, which - obviously - was not going to be a problem. The second one was when I was diagnosed with AF two days prior to flying out to Cyprus for our Golden Wedding celebration. Due to the fact that there was no-one prepared to state I was fit to go on holiday, Avanti informed me our travel insurance (annual policy) would not cover anything that arose which may be connected to the AF and to call back after I had seen the Cardiologist to discuss the cover for the remainder of the year. We decided to take the risk. Fortunately, it was not until after we came back and I had an appointment with a Cardiologist for full diagnosis and medication prescription that we realized how serious it could have been. Called back, was charged £100 to cover the AF for the remaining 4 months of the year. However, anyone with an annual Nationwide Flex Account cover may find that if a condition arises after they have booked a holiday that they are covered.
I wouldn't risk that with Nationwide, I had untreated A/f when I flew to Thailand. Heart valve ruptured in flight, legs blew up like tree trunks, skin split and bleed for two weeks!! Nationwide wouldn't cover so I was treated at a pharmacy clinic! I haven't been well enough to fly for ages, but I did use a specialist company later which was cheaper than the banks policy excess.
It's worth asking GP/ Specialist what to declare though, as I have silly multiple diagnoses from early days which haven't been joined up!! My GP said just say heart failure and no more. I've been in H/f for 33 years and risked a 14 day cruise a while ago but they were clear I wouldn't be covered for that problem.
