Hi Panzer. I’ve had 5 valve replacement surgeries and up until the 4th, I had insurance with my bank and they were happy to cover me. Might be worth seeing if your bank offer a travel package? I still have the insurance and it covers me for everything else, just not cardiac. No one will insure me for anything cardiac now without remortgaging the house! 😂

If you have an upcoming medical procedure you may find travel insurance providers decline to cover you, or the premium costs are expensive. My suggestion is to find a comparison site for travel insurance with pre existing medical conditions and take it from there. Or talk to a local insurance broker. And since we are all different just because someone on here got a reasonable deal with one insurance provider doesn't mean someone else will. That's why you need to do your own research.

trying to add perspective, AVR done privately will be about £50,000. And that doesn’t include travel (eg Turkey to England).

I began to feel very unwell as I approached my op. Perhaps six weeks prior. I would look forward to Turkey in 2025.

in the paper the other day I saw a crowdfunding campaign by a family whose father, though awaiting an operation on his heart, couldn’t get travel insurance. They decided to go on hol anyway, he was taken ill and into hospital, the hospital in Turkey wont release him until they’ve paid half of the £80000 owing. Even then he would need to have specialised travel home. So, NEVER travel abroad until you’ve got the insurance sorted out.

Go to MoneyHelper or Moneysavingexpert (Martin Lewis) for more help.

I have had an AVR. The best advice I can give is to shop around. My quotes varied wildly from uninsurable to about £300, all for the same pre-existing conditions. Good luck.

In my experience, if you want a reasonable premium, you need to wait two years after your last event. As others have advised, don’t go abroad without full cover.

I couldn’t get insurance pre-op and cancelled my trips. 3 months post trip I managed to find insurance with no problems but understandably with a higher premium. Found annual policy was much better value. At the end of the day it’s only any good if they pay out when required.

Hi, not got the same as yourself but I have just sorted my travel insurance and found Admiral to be really reasonable. Some quotes were extortionate!

I was due to go to Turkey in May 2018 whilst I was awaiting valve replacement - my doctor refused to allow me to travel and the holiday had to be cancelled

I had a TAVI procedure for Aortic Stenosis in March at St. Barts. Now I'm back to full normal exercise routines. The instructions from the hospital after discharge (day after procedure) was that travel is permitted almost immediately when youve got your fitness back. Speed of recovery in any case depends on your prior fitness level. My multi-trip annual travel insurance (with Forces Pension Society and Trinity Travel) , covers me for almost anything unless travelling against medical advice or terminal diagnosis or Lung diseases such as COPD. So shop around.

I’m triple bypass last December. It went tremendously well and I’ve never felt better. Looking to travel to the EU in September and also looking for recommendations for cheaper insurance

All Clear, Staysure and Avanti seem to be the prime movers for existing condition travel Insurance. My wife and myself have a very long list of pre existing. Her with Ischaemic Heart Disease and myself with Liver Cirrhosis, Heart Attack and Pericarditis. Yes, it's expensive to Insure but worth it. Leave absolutely nothing out whilst applying for cover. And I mean nothing, even declared if you've ever had Covid. We plumped for Annual cover and because of that cover we've gone slightly mad these last 12 months and been away 5 times.
