Bio-oil skin use

I'm three weeks post 4x CABG and the leg where the vein was taken is still bruised and swollen, but the wounds are healing well. The skin on my leg is so dry and flaking and uncomfortable. I've been given some Bio-oil and told it will improve the dryness and reduce scarring.

Has anyone else used this oil, or any other creams/potions? Do you think it's too early to be using anything?

No idea about Bio Oil, I alternate between E45 Lotion & Avon Skin So Soft, have tried Aveeno but couldn't get away with it. I was prescribed Hydramol but it was like trying to apply axle grease.

Same here with Hydramol. I have horrifically dry skin everywhere and am supposed to bathe with it. I can't get out of the bath for slipping. Aveeno does several types of lotion. The simple Avneeno cream works best, no n greasy and soaks in well. Bio OIl for scar reduction is fantastic.

I used Bio oil on old scar tissue ( from burns) and to my utter amazement after months of daily use the scars actually disappeared! You have to stick at it to see a result but it is worth the effort and you only need a tiny amount each time. When my husband had his face stitched up after a fall (and yes he was on the way back from the pub) I made him use it as soon as the stitches were removed twice a day and his scars are practically invisible (thin, flat and white lines). I have no idea if it would alleviate dry skin though.....

I started to use bio oil but found it messy. I was advised not to use anything on my scars for the first 2 months by my daughter, who has 12 years nursing experience. I now use Remescar which I find much nicer and my scars are fading slowly.

Hubby was told to use E45 or similar twice a day. Used bio oil for a while but went back to e45. He is.now 12 months post surgery and we are going to get some bio oil to fade the scars. Both are good!

I have used bio oil after all my surgeries (many) it is brilliant. Reduces discomfort and swelling and scarring eventually vanishes. It was recommended to me by ortho surgeon.. Only stipulation - don't use on open wounds!

Good morning,

7 months on after the same surgery as you I am using Bio most days on my leg scars and sternum as bumpy, bruised and still tender. I was advised to massage the oil as deeply as possible as that will break down the internal scar tissue. This certainly has made a difference in my sternum which has reduced some of the lumpiness. The scars and bruises on my legs are still there but I keep being told it’s still early days. Give the massaging a go but gently at first, I was also told not to use anything until wounds have healed.

Good luck.

BIo oil shouldn't be used on an open wound. I used it for a 40 year old big hard, raised scar and within weeks it had vanished to just a red mark. HOwever when I Usd it more recently I found I was allergic to it. I don't know if they changed the formula oor it was just me. It's wonderful stuff for stretch marks and scars but I would have thought not specifically for dry skin. Test a small patch first. Vit E cream is usually given for dry skin but I've found that Aveeno cream is far better and non greasy.

Just use E45 , those in leg are angry for about 8 weeks the little blighters :)

I only used E45 on both chest and leg and I'm well chuffed with them ,

Did you have it done at Blackpool ?

Another vote for Bio Oil. Works really well- I’m not bothered by the look of scars (from a knee replacement) but it made it much more comfortable. I also used it on my arm and leg bruising after angioplasty, and helped keep that comfortable (it was a bit extreme). My wife has is also a fan after surgery. As mentioned, not for a open wounds etc.

Definitely worth it, and I am generally very sceptical about ‘snake oil’ cures.
