I had an AVR one year ago and its more like a thump thump thump to me, although I can hear it ticking sometimes, when I have had a shower for example. Its quite loud and gets me down sometimes, I was rather hoping it would either quieten down a bit or at least I would get more used to it! In answer to your question Mewg I would say it depends on what your doing that makes the difference, for me at any rate.

yes i was told it would get quieter but its loud 1 minure then it goes quiet again if i do sumthing which gets my heart rate i can umderstand it varying but i can just be sitting down and then it changes.akso i get like fluters in my throat.

Both my husband and I have mechanical mitral valves. When sitting up in bed in the mornings, sometimes I can hear mine and sometimes I can hear his. There doesn't seem to be much pattern or reason to it. Weird!

I suspect it’s like many things, sometimes you tune into the sound and other times you do not. It’s a bit like the old mantle clocks, sometimes you hear the tick-tick above seemingly everything and other times you are completely unaware of it, but the sound level is always the same. You could always try and think of it positively, if you can hear it you know it’s working!

A resting heart rate of 51 isn’t a major issue - mine is about the same. If it drops to low 40s, then I’d be visiting my GP.

I had both valves replaced in 2010. Mine are the same- some days very loud & people comment on them. Other times very quiet.
