Six months after AVR

I have struggled with my rehab. Had a big problem when gout flared up.

Recently realized i am not taking simple walks, so i restarted. Gentle walks, chat whilst i walked. Five days and i was doing a gentle mile. Then day six i did just a hundred yards extra. My head spun. I had to stop and grab a fence to avoid falling. My legs tried to run away from me.

Quite a struggle to get the final yards home. Then just sat in a heap for two hours to recover.

Later i got a lot of discomfort that seems to be indegestion.

Whatever is going on.

Can you get through to your medics for a telephone or email consult? It sounds like something they should know about. If you can't get through to them, perhaps the BHF Heart Helpline nurses can help. The following link is to their contact details page and has the latest contact information for them:

This is something either your cardiologist ( if your still under) or your GP should be made aware of. You do say you have had problems with rehab due to your gout flare up, so maybe you have just over done it, but these symptoms certainly need addressing.

Let us know how you get on.

Hey Colin. Hope you're OK and that sounds like it was a worrying and unexpected turn. Just to add I very much agree with what Sunnie and Pauline have said; get a second opinion, as what happened doesn't sound great and you obviously don't want a repeat I imagine! It may for all us non-docs know be something unrelated to the heart, but then again it may not be. So definitely worth flagging it up at the very least. Good luck and hope you get some clarity. Take care of yourself. Nic x

As others have said, I would certainly flag this up with your GP and cardiologist. I suffered from a similar thing, and after all the worries of heart surgery, it can be a very frightening experience just as you think you are recovering. In my case my dizzy spells were caused by the Bisoprolol I was taking. Good luck in your progress.

Thats struck a chord, thank you. Today i will look at my numerous medications to see if any are consistent with dizzy spells. Many thanks, your words mean a lot

If you get tempted to go walking again, try taking a couple of walking poles, you can rest on them if you need to and look like a wise bird spotter as you get yourself back together.

I will try out the “ski poles” that an elderly friend uses. She whizzes round the village at a rapid rate of knots. Or i will have wife on one side and walking crutch on .the other.

Comments are so reassuring. And have knocked abit of common sense in to my brain.
