my husband is 6 days post surgery, and has been given Warfarin as a blood thinner. When I asked why, thinking Warfarin was given for a mechanical valve, I was told it’s because he has AF!
He’s become also quite confused, so again advice from me, should I try& speak to a registrar/surgeon, as I only get talking to the nurse on the ward. I’m finding the stress of this is giving me what I think are palpitations& beating in my ear at night. (I’m HA& 5 stents 7 months ago)
Not a good year for us, thanks for listening ! ♥️

if it is concerning you both, and assuming your husband is not in a cognisant state to ask questions when the doctors do their rounds, it is certainly a good idea for your to try to talk to the doctor who is in change of your husband's case, rather than a ward nurse who is basically only there to carry out instructions about when to give medication and not make decisions about which medication to prescribe and the reasoning behind it.
Interesting. My husband was diagnosed with AF this afternoon during his pacemaker check. He was told that he would need to take a blood thinner, so I asked if he could have rivaroxiban (or whatever 😁) and not warfarin because of the frequent testing and food effect. She told me that, as you say, warfarin is usually only used in mechanical cases and is thought to be quite old hat. She said there were now a few rivaroxiban type thinners, and that it would be up to the GP which one was prescribed.
thanks for getting back to me Troilus, I’m seeing the senior registrar tomorrow, so it will be interesting to see if he is willing to change the warfarin!
if you have concerns speak up. Stand your ground a little. I’ve done it with my relative due to causing blackouts, the hospital and doctors have agreed another method.
Your doing amazing and the people here are so kind. Never be afraid to challenge
thanks Lydia, I’ve lost my confidence since the HA. The anwer to the warfrain is surgeon yesterday took him of it, said the AF had settled down! He’s been sent home today, stitches not out, which means I have to contact GP in a few days& take him down to them.
Sounds like Im complaining, the care in the hospital has been wonderful, & the surgery saved his life, but I think another few days would have made all the difference. Thanks for listening x
