Just wanted to ask your opinion on bed mattresses. I have been having lots of back pain and wondered if anyone has a memory foam mattress and are they any good! I have heard mixed reviews from friends but wondered if any of you have one and does it help with the joint pain?
Would be grateful on your thoughts. Or if any other type of mattress you would recommend.
Thanks
Angela

I can't help because we've been considering this for at least two years! Our current mattress is dreadful, so about 9 months ago we bought a feather topper to go on it. That is now even worse than the mattress! In fact, things are so bed that I now sleep downstairs on the sofa because that is where I'm most comfortable.
The only thing that has prevented us going the memory foam route is that I've heard they're warm, very warm! I sweat enough as it is, without adding to the burden. Oh, yes, and the reason we're looking at toppers rather than a whole mattress is because with the current rate of sweats I'd knacker it within a couple of months.
So any advice/information about mattresses would be welcome here too!
Hadnt really thought about my night sweats! I would be the same and destroy the mattress very quickly! So any advice peeps about mattress toppers would be very welcome!!!
I have an electric bed but found the so called orthapaedic matress sold with it, impossible to help my back pain. I then tried various others including memory foam which just sinks when you get warm.
I then plumped for a very firm solid foam matress which has a soft topping built in to make it comfy. No springs or anything and it came with a zipper protective sheet so fully protected from any sweating etc.
This has been great and I have used it for over 5 years now and believe me it has been put through it as I have had to spend a lot of time in or on it because of illness.
These are not overly expensive either and I purchased mine online next day delivery.
Mattress comfort is rather a personal thing but this worked so well for me that I had the same type made for my motorhome.
That does help darling - do you have the make of the zipper protective sheet? Or know where I can source one that isn't just a sheet of crinkly polythene stuff?
You can get them fully waterproof but very expensive and I imagine that would make you sweat even more. Mine is breathable waterproof and dustmite proof on the mattress part and it encapsulates the whole mattress, so doesn't move about. That is the sort you want.
This one is 100% cotton so should be o.k but there are others around and so just showing you an example.....I hope no-one minds the advertisement !!!
I have a 'fairly expensive' mattress that is supposed to be good for your back (not sure of the brand, but the type they sell you in mattress stores). On top I also have an 'expensive' sheepskin type overlay which is supposed to be warm in winter, cool in summer. I used to be a very good sleeper however with the prednisone have had to have a bit of pharmaceutical help. I've said to the doctors more than one that I felt if I had a good nights sleep I could cope with the next day (and they've agreed with me and handed over a script).
Have to agree with Di regarding the night sweats - wouldn't want anything that would add to the heat.
Also 'promised' myself that my next bed was one that raised the feet and head with the touch of a button but think that will be a long way down the track - too expensive and this one cost me a lot (and is quite good).
Having been diagnosed with a sleeping/breathing dissorder I know it doesn't take much to knock you off course, spiraling into feeling really out of control.
As for the night sweats they really drive you mad and intefere with your sleep.
Over the years I have now resorted to having my own room with electric bed, tv and all my own conforts etc. That way I can manage my own sleep problems and my husband lives to fight another day.
I know not everyone would want to sleep alone, but we all have to deal with this problem in our own way and it's helpful for other people here to know they are not alone with this problem.
Oh Andrea, I wish I had the space to have my own room - maybe when my sons stop playing yo-yo and finally move out for good I'll get there. Much as I love the OH I think for both of us it would be better if we had separate rooms. As I said elsewhere, I'm currently sleeping on the sofa - sleeping alone reduces the sweat problem and I can clunk around when I turn over without worrying about disturbing the OH, who still works full time and needs to get a good night's sleep if at all possible. He doesn't moan at all, but I feel terribly guilty. My bulk is such that I can't turn over or change position without major thumping around - I'm ungainly at the best of times but nowadays it's like I'm full-term pregnant again!
My sleep is poor, which I think is why I'm such a misery-guts lately. It's almost impossible to function.
I'll leave the research to the OH - he loves all that. Me? I go out and buy the first thing that looks like it will do what I want. I am invariably disappointed! We complement one another very nicely, my OH and me, he needs a kick up the arse from time to time and I certainly need sitting on from time-to-time!
Oh you do make me laugh! Although that hurts at the moment cos I am aching all over!!
I havent told my OH of my plans to change the mattress cos the thought of spending money usually sends him into some sort of manic panic and he breaks out in a sweat. He hasnt got just mothballs in his wallet but mushrooms from all the mould growing!!!!!!
I used to sleep on the sofa as well when my son lived here and I know it isn't ideal. We also tried single beds in our bedroom but when I fell really ill and ended up bedridden most of the time, we decided to create a special room just for me.
I can really sympathise with how it must be affecting you.
What is it about Sons not wanting to completely leave home, your're not knitting him those lovely strippy socks are you ?
Actually, this afternoon the OH started to discuss that I could possibly turn this room (the old smallest bedroom and now 'my office', into a room of my own! He must be psychic! I will now have to appear not to be too eager...
My back has seriously improved (at one time i have difficulty walking) but now its much better. I would recommend a very firm mattress with a mattress topper, worked wonders for me.
Let me know if you need any more info and I can go and take a closer look at it. I think it is a reylon one
