It's working for me...

I was diagnosed with Behcets some 25 years ago now, although I've had the ulceration issues in particular ever since I was a teenager (now 52).

Bear with me - but I've been largely free of the ulcers now for three months after an experimental treatment from my GP.

The down side has been an inability to kiss my wife properly for many decades, but the effects were usually manageable through a combination of ibuprofen for pain killing and anti inflammation and frequent salt water rinses. More serious outbreaks required steroids but these have been harder and harder to get in a useful form through GPs and consultants recently. Food allergy analyses etc have also helped remove some particular triggers, as did changing the filler material in my teeth and my toothpaste.

I was pretty much always suffering from one or more of the ulcers and they were usually about the size of a small fingernail. Around two or three times a year, largely stress driven, a major outbreak would put me in bed for a day or so, and it felt like a depressive illness in these peaks. Having had this for decades, I'd also been in a clinical trial, but it was clear that they were more interested in the scar tissue issue much more than any cure or treatment for Behcets.

Essentially - been there, got the T-shirt.

So when I say I've had the best reaction to treatment yet, it is heartfelt. Nervously so. My Dad died recently, and even with very high levels of stress, the improvement has been palpable.

The treatment - apparently it's used for stomach ulceration - and is a step up on the helpful effects (albeit not as dramatically) as tablets like Zantac. The technical name is Omeprazole, from Sandoz. A code PL04416/0651 may help track it down. I started with 20mg daily and saw improvements within a week or so. I'm now cutting down to 10mg and it is still working well. Stopping it meant the ulcers were back within days.

The ulcers are gone now. When I do get ulceration, it is what most people would regard as normal - ie a small sore that lasts for a few days and responds to normal retail treatments; not the large sore 4-6 week monsters I've been saddled with for decades.

In my case there is clearly some link between the chemical balance in my upper digestive system and the ulceration. Do not assume that it is a wonder treatment or cure - all I am saying is that it is working for me, and has been a major change to my lifestyle now for months. It may be worth discussing with your GP. And fingers crossed it continues to work as it has so far...

I've never heard of omeprazole helping anything other than reflux/or stomach ulcers before (I'm on it for reflux). I'm so pleased you have found something to help
