Strange Bruises During Flare Up

During my recent flare up I had a new symptom appear. With zero injury to note, large bruises have appeared on my legs (see photo). Slightly inflamed. The leg aches, but this is not painful to touch. Has anyone else seen anything like this? I'm putting it down to a flare up because I've also had a few ulcers and back pain at the same time.

I get random bruises too during a flare up, sometimes I get a build up of pain in an area before I feel a ‘pop’ and get a bruise or they just magically appear.

Behcets is a vascular condition so I assume they are just par the course, they do worry me though.

Hello, I've had this too, the bruises started before I started to get red marks (probably erythema nodosum) . This was one of the things that caused me to go to my GP and ask if I could be suffering from Behcets. I haven't had many though, mostly on my legs but one or two on my arms.

I’ve had so many unexplained bruises as well And they look exactly like your picture. They’re getting to be so often that I am quite worried. So I will be discussing with my doctor on next visit. I get them all over my body.

Yes! I got these all the time in the first few years that I had this diagnosis. This picture could easily have been of my leg back then. It usually started with a severely itchy rash, and would then get hoT and hard, much of the time. It was suggested to me In Retrospect that it could have been erythema nodosum given the hardness etc. I did have other lesions biopsied as e nodosum. The bruises stopped, for the most part, after starting immunosuppression. I suggest taking pictures of anything that looks strange. I did, and it helped significantly, as whenever I had an appointment, there was never anything on me to show the md.

Thanks so much for your kind replies. I've been keeping a photo diary and reporting symptoms to my GP. But have an appointment with the Behcets Institute in Birmingham soon so we're waiting for their opinion (my GP has never treated Behcets before). Currently taking the triple mouthwash, a Betamethasone inhaler and colchicine during flare ups. Good to know these bruises are so common and not ness. a red flag. Thanks again :)

When taken for gout, colchicine is taken during flares. In Behçet’s, colchicine is generally taken every day. It is a drug that acts in several different ways. My rheumatologist explained it to me thus: in the short term it acts as an anti-inflammatory (which is how it helps gout) but when taken over the course of several months it acts at a cellular level and limits the over-production of neutrophils, which is a factor in Behçet’s.

I would ask for a clotting test if you haven’t had one and check out photos of APS or Hughes Syndrome - it can exist along side conditions like behcets.

Thank you, that's really helpful. It's exactly what my GP has suggested.

Hello,

This is one of the first BD symptoms that I’ve been getting for many years mostly on my limbs, thighs in particular but arms as well. It is blood vessel inflammation (thrombophlebitis) caused by the disease. Luckily in my case so far it’s only involved superficial veins although I am worried that it may progress to attack deeper blood vessels and cause internal bleeding. It seems to respond to colchicine and immuno suppressants.

That looks familiar for me too. I have pictures of them and it looks like I was in a car wreck or something when you see them altogether. They don’t hurt much for some reason.
