UTI?

Hey friends!

I’ve had problems with UTIs for many, many years, including yeast infections which my doctor told me is probably related to Behçets. However he wasn’t sure about the UTI part so here I am asking, do any of you suffer from UTI’s as well? Or symptoms that are similar? How do you treat it?

Wishing everyone well,

Stina

Hey Stin4, this is one of my main symptoms. A urologist has suggested I may have reactive arthritis as oppose to behcets, worth having a look they are very similar. Did you have an infection at the onset of your symptoms?

Yes!

Had UTI's constantly until I received infusions to raise my igg levels. None since then. Also, they stretched my urethra (not painful) to make sure my bladder emptied fully. Worth it not to get the darn infections.

Hi Stina

Up until 3 years ago I would say absolutely yes on such a regular basis I was put on a maintenance dose of the antibiotic Macrodantin ( also called Nitrofurantoin, and sold under the trade name Macrobid among others, is an antibiotic used to treat bladder infections. I took this for successfully 3 years and continued to read more and more about taking antibiotics long term so decided to do some research and came across an article written by an American urologist about Macrodantin being used as a maintenance dose for UTI's and suggested people should try high strength Cranberry tablets so I decided I would give this a try and after taking these at the same time as the Macrodantin for 2 weeks I slowly removed the Macrodantin over a 2 week period, I have not had a UTI since. Then last year another member of our group (sorry forgot the ladies name) mentioned recurrent UTI's and another product they used called D-mannose.

D-mannose is a type of sugar that’s related to the better-known glucose. These sugars are both simple sugars —that is, they consist of just one molecule of sugar. As well, both occur naturally in your body and are also found in some plants in the form of starch.

Several fruits and vegetables contain D-mannose, including:

cranberries (and cranberry juice)

apples

oranges

peaches

broccoli

green beans

This sugar is also found in certain nutritional supplements, available as capsules or powders. Some contain D-mannose by itself, while others include additional ingredients, such as:

cranberry

dandelion extract

hibiscus

rose hips

probiotics

Many people take D-mannose for treating and preventing urinary tract infections (UTIs). D-mannose is thought to block certain bacteria from growing in the urinary tract. But does it work? healthline.com/health/d-man...

I read lots about this and everything sounded convincing enough for me to give this a try, I now take both the triple strength cranberry and the D-mannose, I take one triple strength cranberry tablet and one D-mannose capsule tablet with a glass of water before going to bed and if I want to take earlier I just make sure I have nothing to eat afterwards. My GP advised me to ensure I go for a pee and ensure you wash yourself thoroughly immediately after intercourse and never use soap or any sprays just water to wash yourself, no douching.

I was also diagnosed with a small diverticulum in the urethra, this is the tube we pee out off which is only around 2.5cm long.

Removing refined carbohydrates from my diet has reduced the yeast infection too, and in the majority of cases I also use a plastic water bottle filled with warm water to wash after going to the toilet, if I feel any kind of niggles down there then I add tea tree oil to the water and give this a good old shake before using, I use this also when I have had genital ulcers.

All the best on getting sorted :-)

I used to have UTI's ALL. THE. TIME. I was misdiagnosed with ICC, (inflammation of the bladder lining... essentially a uti without the bacterial infection type). Finally saw a new urologoist who said I was resistant to the common uti meds, bactrim, macrobid, amoxicillin etc and could only use 500 mg cipro BID for 7days. He also told me that my urine was to be sent out to culture EACH time, and to tell urgent care to do so instead of simple dip stick test for leukocytes and nitrates.

ultimately, through years of religious peeing, shower rituals, and cranberry pills... i got prescribed macrodantin 50mg. I was to take it at night, or after sex. It totally worked. It also help calmed the paranoia. I stopped taking it about 4-5 years ago though as i was trying to decrease my medication load.

there was another thing that had happened at this time though, I went sucrose free. Learned during this time (while also dealing with chronic thrush...theres your yeast problem) that I became sucrose intolerant. Did the candida diet for 9 months, then transitioned into low carb, still sugarfree- and it was the factor that changed everything for me.

Havent had a uti since and i attribute it to going sugar free. I discussed this with my urologist and he said it made total sense. If i was pissing out undigested sugars, it would have been bacteria heaven.

someone else also said their utis (on top of stomach issues) stopped with going sugar free.

hope this helps xoxox
