I ate a lot of milk products yesterday and I had a bloody stool. Should I avoid dairy products?

I have been taking doxycycline 100 g. twice a day for the past 5 days and, yesterday I had a lot of dairy foods...and a bloody stool this morning. Do you think it was because of all the dairy I had? Should I avoid dairy products for the remainder of the time I have to take the doxycycline? Thanks!

Dear Camille,

I don't think the bloody stool is related to taking doxycycline. It may be for some other reason, like piles (haemorrhoids), anal fissure or possibly bloody diarrhoea from food poisoning, etc.

I'm assuming you're taking the medication for just seven days? If that's the case, try to complete the course. There is no particular need to avoid dairy products when taking doxycycline. The only notable interaction while taking doxycycline is to avoid antacids containing magnesium, calcium and aluminium salts and also zinc and iron supplements. All these medications can impair the absorption of the antibiotic.

Rgds,

Adhari.

Hi Camille... don't think the dairy products has anything to do with it. Just wondering if it's possibly piles? Have you had constipation or been straining to pass a motion....( too much dairy can make you constipated) Have you noticed any soreness, or itching ... they are often signs of piles. If it's piles then there's creams etc which help heal them. Assuming it's probably piles, try not to get constipated. If the bleeding continues and you're sure it's not piles then check with your gp.
