Hormonal coil fitted - still getting abdominal cramps

Hi,

I had the hormonal coil fitted 8 weeks ago and still getting abdominal cramps. Is this normal? It's the first time of having a coil and I'm struggling to get into the sexual health clinic to get it checked and my own doctors just say I need to go to the sexual health clinic!

Thank you.

Yes some women can experience discomfort for weeks after an IUD/IUS insertion. An assessment would be done to ensure you don't have a pelvic infection, as this may sometimes occur after instrumentation at the cervix . Also a pregnancy test in any woman with lower abdominal discomfort.

i had cramps from my coil for weeks after it was changed. i went to my GP who sent me for a ultrasound to check it was positioned correctly. It was but I was still in pain so I ended up back at the GUM clinic for it to be removed as it didn't settle after 4 months.

Hi thanks for your replies. I have just recently had it removed and the pains disappeared a few hours later and I've been ok since.
