I have an sca with no number and suffer with back pain is weakness in core muscles a recognized problem my chiropractor said he thought my muscles were "firing in the wrong order" a physio said I had a weakness on my left or is it just my age catching up [I am 50 and probably abused it in days gone by]
back pain: I have an sca with no number and suffer... - Ataxia UK
back pain
I get Lower back pain and was told by the physio it was due to adjusting my walk and stance to combat the balance , I have a weakness on my left hand side also, I guess most of us get used to adjusting our walk to combat the balance thing , which in turn leads us to walk with our feet further apart ,which could in turn be a cause of the back pain
Hope it eases for you soon.
Best regards Razzy
Hi Razzy.
What you say makes sense to me.
I have only recently been diagnosed with ataxia, but have suffered various back pains for years without ever finding a solution - or even much sympathy. One of my doctors told me to just put up with it...
Following on from you said about adjusting your walk, I am beginning to wonder if the Ataxia wasn't around for a while and I was holding my body, perhaps awkwardly, to compensate for the unsteadiness - which I didn't really recognise at the time.
Time for a talk with my physio - thank you. Very helpful
Hiya! I have sca6 and also have lower back pain, which I was also getting long before I was diagnosed. I too have a weakness on my left side and agree with Razzy these pains are because we compensate to keep our balance. xx
I am glad I replied to this Question now because it seems to make more sense now I know I am not the only one who has trouble. If you use a stick try to use it on your left side if you are right handed as with a weaker left side I found my stumbles and staggers were all to the left , I do have problems tripping myself up if me stick is to the left though
Hope you all have as good a day as possible
Hi Razzy, Ive got a stick but can't use it, like you, my left side has a few problems. I'll try your suggestion. Have a good day.

Hiya johnpa, I also have a SCA with no number and lower backpain. It was great to read your thoughts. I live in Spain and don't know anyone here with SCA ? still life goes on.
Have a good day

I was advised to read a book called, 'Treat your own back' by Robbin Mckenzie. I found it very useful. For me the excersises are simple and very effective and the reading is educational.
