Medical bracelet

I have been falling over a lot the last few months, a few friends have suggested a medical bracelet with the name of my condition and my name as I do worry if I fall over when I am on my own and maybe can't say anything. Any suggestions welcome as I have looked everywhere and don't know where to turn now. Thanks Wendygirl x

Ataxia UK sell rubber wristbands that identify the condition for I think only £1. Their prime purpose is to publicise the condition but you could write your ID and contact telephone number on the blank inside. I find it useful when telling anybody about the condition. At least once a week someone will ask me about my wristband, giving me the opportunity to evangelise!

I hadn't thought about the ID possibility until you posed the question so I will definitely add my name and number now.

I got the rubber wristband from a good friend. Now I'll write my contact details on the back.

Keep well

Lots of options depending on how computer or mobile phone you are. If you don't mind surfing there are a number of medical ID bracelets and necklaces etc out there, they can be quite expensive.

Then there are the mini memory sticks, some come really fancy and for a few pounds, you can can type in everything about your health and medication and pop it in your purse, have one attached to a bag etc etc.

I've even found some 'flash me find me' bracelets where the QR code square is scanned and the information can be shared widely. It's a discrete leather strap with a small plastic square with the code on about 3cm square.

I have some sparkly dog discs, heart shaped and all twinkly that were engraved, bought them on ebay, you can get quite a bit of info on them. Mine refers the reader to the memory stick attached. I have even got a sparkly dog collar (smallest size) with a stick and disc attached. I can then attach that to a bigger bag when we go out for the day.

The choices and options are endless. Ebay is a good source for cheap and twinkly accessories, anything to put a bit of sparkle into life...

I wear a MeKeyIce USB sports wristband as it holds far more than the typical medical ID tags and is immediately accessible

Hi Wendy girl

As well as a medical bracelet I have thought of two other things which may be helpful to you.

The first is an alarm pendant that you press if you fall and are unable to get up. This is linked to a phone line which alerts someone when you press it and they speak to you via a microphone that is attached to your land line to ask what help you need.

I can't remember the official name of the other thing but I have a green sticker on my fridge which, if I fell at home and the paramedics had to attend, alerts them to the fact there is a green bottle in my fridge which contains my health information. I am not sure whether this initiative is dependant on where you live.

Either social work or OT would be the best people to talk this through with.

Best wishes

Harriet

Harriet do you know the name of the alarm pendant? I had a bad fall on Saturday in my garage I was carrying a glass vase which shattered when I fell so trying to get up was impossible. My neighbour heard me screaming for help while my family were sitting cosy in my house but if I could of alerted them it would of been easier. Thanksxx

Hi

I am afraid I don't remember much wendygirl. I was recommended it a long time ago and didn't take it any further. I think I was told about the concept rather than a specific alarm. In any event technology has greatly improved since. If you google 'falls alarm' a lot of things come up. I hope you find something that works for you.

Good luck and best wishes

I think that's a great idea. I used a 3 wheeled walker for few years but would fall, especially if it was windy. I'm now in a wheelchair but think a info. bracelet is a great idea

Hi Wendygirl. Not a bracelet but I keep all my information (illnesses, how it affects me, medications etc.) on my phone, which is accessible to health care professionals even if it's locked. If you don't have it included on your phone there are Apps available that do the same thing.

Kind regards
