cerebellar ataxia and thyroid

does anyone who is diagnosed with cerebellar ataxia have thyroid problems/ So many of the symptoms are the same, ie balance ,dizziness, muscle incoordination of hands and feet, tiredness to name a few

Yes I have under active Thyroid but the only thing I would say is similar is fatigue .

under the nhs site one of the causes of ataxia is an underactive thyroid. my neurologist checked me for thyroid antibodies but mine came back negative. I read thyroid antibodies can attack the cellerbellum. always worth checking. I;m still looking for answers to my ataxia, the docters havn't found it yet so its keep going.

Have you been tested for coeliac disease? I have coeliac ataxia as do others here. Prof Marios in Sheffield and Alessio Fasano are good videos to watch on YouTube.

Sorry to know you are having so many problems and yet NO help from the medical profession.

I have hypothyroidism and over the last 2/3 years (with hindsight a longer period of time) I have developed many other problems: dizziness, loosing my balance, pins and needles, deteriorating vision, etc. I suppose this could be called ataxia... Reading your post has made me wonder. Would you mind telling me if you have been diagnosed with cerebellar ataxia, and how (contrast MRI scan?) and if so who referred you for diagnosis? I am interested to find out.. So thank you if you are able to reply to my post.

I feel for you and hope in vain someone in the medical profession will be able to give you answers and much needed help. All members of this forum will give you much support and good advice too.

I have been diagnosed with cerebellar ataxia through an mri scan and referred to Sheffield. still trying to find whats causing the ataxia. genetics have been ruled out

I do hope the cause will be found so that you might get some help. Perhaps a referral to the London hospital for Neurology, Russel Square, would provide an answer... just an idea.

I too have been referred to Sheffield, I have underactive thyroid and cerebellum ataxia but not been diagnosed properly, it all takes so long, am very wobbly.

Hi there, I wonder if an under-active thyroid points to an autoimmune issue, which I have. I have the antibody CV2 but no lung cancer "just" CA.

So many people have Hypothyroidism without having Ataxia. Several people I know who are not related to me have it as well.

My diagnosis of Hypothyroidism through blood tests came 5 years after my diagnosis of Cerebellar Ataxia so I think one was not related to the other.

I have FA. I had an overactive thyroid which was treated to make it underactive and I now take thyroxine. I don't think they are directly related but I do think an unstable thyroid makes the ataxia seem worse.

My C.A came on at 8 years old and when I was in my 50s l devoloped underactive thyriod and am taking thyroxine. I don't think it's made any difference to my aAtaxia . I also been tested at the clinic in London also came back negative.

I have an underactive thyroid as well as SCA6. The thyroid problems come from my Dad's family , but the Ataxia is inherited from my Mum's.

I don't know if there is a connection but I don't think there is in my case.

Hi I have Sca. Had it from 50 I'm now 62 I had an MRI recently and it found a nodule on left side of thyroid I had blood test which was negative the MRI found my spinal cord has gone thinner from when I was first diagnosed

Also have educational dyspraxia MA level coordination, sequencing composition & balance The National Neuro uk gave same test but did not follow up like Tilt test re sleeping /comotosing lapses now stopping me driving before researching fairly as fell breaking shoulder March 2020 triggered by underlying neglected conditions which still ignored .
