Has anyone been prescribed amitriptyline for pain? For quite a few months I have been prescribed different tabs and liquid for ongoing chronic stomach and chest pain without much benefit. Had a stomach endoscope in the past which indicates gastroenteritis/duodenitis that has never cleared up.
Amitriptyline : Has anyone been prescribed... - Ataxia UK
Amitriptyline
Yes, I have been taking it for quite a number of years for pain in my legs. It did help when first prescribed, however I now take other medications to help with other pain problems so can't tell if that one on it's own still is effective.
Yes I take amitriptyline 10mg at night for nerve pain caused by my prolapsed disc. It gives me a good nights sleep, (no pain when I turn over) but I cant say I have any pain associated with my wobbly symptoms (except when I bang my elbow on the wall trying to walk straight!).
I find Quinine Sulphate 30mg at night excellent for my leg cramps through.
Hi, have just re-read your post ... Amytrityline is designed for all types of nerve pain, sciatica, neuralgia etc, and its unlikely it would help gastro-intestinal symptoms.
Hopes that helps a bit.

Years ago before I developed ataxia I was prescribed nortriptyline ( which I am told is similar) by a gastroenterologist for stomach problems similar to yours. It did help for a while but one word of warning, when you want to stop it the withdrawal symptoms are hard to deal with. I now try to manage things myself with alternative therapies and having a healthy diet
Hi Iain
Sorry to hear your pain persists. You must be a strong person to go through all that.It must be bewildering.Amitriptylene seems to have many uses.Maybe our Ataxia makes us hunch up.I think I WOULD Try the AmI..,ACcept the side effects and see how it goes for about 2/3 weeks.

Thanks for all your replies. I have found that so far amitriptyline 10mg at night has helped so far. Although they have been helpful I've found that pain returns around 5 or 6pm. Caz1961, could you tell me where you got the information from regarding Amitriptyline being unlikely to help gastro-intestinal symptoms? Only been taking them for a few days now and like cocoa who takes Nortripyline I find them helpful.
