Am I Odd
Doesn't seem fair, that's for sure!
i do agree with Lucky
Yes, it happens often, it happened to my mum. The damage starts very early, you just don't notice it for many years. It does continue to progress over the years even after you've given up. Some are lucky and it's not too bad, others not so lucky. Down to genetics I reckon. My mum only smoked 5 - 10 a day and gave up years before she was actually diagnosed. Doesn't seem fair, you're right. On the other hand, if you hadn't given up all those years ago you would have been far worse, far earlier. Libby
I gave up smoking 2 years ago. 3 months later I was diagnosed with very severe emphysema. This has happened to a few on here. Breathing normal while smoking. Give it up and very suddenly find you can't breathe properly. Very odd. If I'm very severe how come I wasn't short of breathe when I was smoking ?
Maybe an over-reaction of body? Maybe just coincidence.
If I had breathing problems before I gave up smoking I would have agreed with it being a coincidence but, even though I was 60 at the time, I was doing amateur surfing with my girls in seas with anywhere between 6 to 10 feet waves. I got puffed out now and again as would be expected but no breathing problems like this.
I have had chest problems all my life. COPD was diagnosed 2 years ago.
I never smoked! Hey ho!
My father gave up in 1965 and has only just been diagnosed. I had emphysema diagnosed last October, 5 years since I last touched a cigarette. Life's *itch at times!
I wonder if like me you gave up smoking because of a cough or other health issue, only to discover that it was too late and the start of the damage had been done.
My GP warned me twenty years ago that giving up won't undo the damage I had already done, but would delay what would inevitably happen.
My Consultant mentioned an interesting fact, COPD runs in families and I must ensure my children (all grown up now) should never smoke as they are in the very high risk group.
I GAVE UP SMOKING 25YRS AGO AND HAVE ALSO BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH COPD A YEAR AGO,MY DOCTOR TOLD ME IT DOES NOT MATTER HOW LONG AGO YOU GAVE IT UP IF YOU SMOKED THEN THERE IS A CHANCE YOU WILL SUFFER FROM COPD AND I SHOULD NEVER HAVE SMOKED IN THE FIRST PLACE. OH IF ONLY WE KNEW THEN WHAT WE KNOW NOW
