Looking for different people's experiences of the Kindles, wondering which one to buy. Gordon has been helpful so far with his input, but any others feel ready to give me their experiences please do!

Hi Daxie, My husband bought me a kindle last Christmas and I love it, its so easy to use and so easy to download new books. This week Ive read 50 Shades of Black, 50 Shades Darker and 50 Shades Freed. As if Im not breathless enough!!!. Problem is once I start on a new book I cant put it down and last nite I read a murder mystery until 3am as I couldnt put it down. Whichever kindle you choose Im sure you will love it and be able to enjoy all you read. Luv Lorraine xx

Back to kindles. I love mine. I had the second type that came out which is without a keyboard. It is therefore lighter and smaller than the original kindle. The latest model is touchscreen which some people prefer, but of course it costs more.

I know the new kindle fire is just out, but I don't know much about that. Main point though, I think Kindle is better than all the other e-readers (and Which? agree). Better choice of books and easy to use.

An iPad! You get a kindle app on it and it does so much more, yes it's more expensive but they're rather wow! X

Your absolutely right but its worth bearing in mind that a charged kindle lasts a month whilst a charged ipad is about 5 hours.

Hi Daxie. I bought the Kindle Keyboard 3G (£146) and I'm delighted with it. Not only is it easy to use with ebooks, this model also supports Audible audiobooks so you can take away the strain of reading and let someone else do it for you. It's so handy being able to carry all your books and audio books around in one small gadget. The other plus side is that I've read books that I would never dream of buying in a bookshop but that I've found by browsing through Kindle titles.

Complete ebooks dowload in less than a minute, a bit longer for audio, and it is one of the best buys I have made.

Daxie I have a Kindle, it is touch screen, has audio, keyboard etc : But I believe whichever version you purchase, it's your choice, depends on your requirements.

More importantly, the COVER you choose. Cos if you spend that much on an item you want to look after it.

I chose the material, zip up one, with a peice of elastic on the back cover. I find this invaluable, I just slot my fingers under the elastic while holding the Kindle, I have a problem with arthritic hands, and find this makes it easy to 'hold'' the kindle, no pressure needed. It stops me accidently 'dropping' the Kindle. If I do, the cover dampens the impact.

Whatever you choose, I hope you get as much enjoyment as I do, and it's surprising how many FREE books you can access as well. Enjoy.

I have a Kindle, 89.00 so just the basic.. Best thing I've ever bought.. you can get free books , a group on facebook list free books daily.. Amazon give you free books or you can buy books for as little as 89p I love my kindle.. Like most of you I stay home due to breathing issues and to while away the day I either read or crochet shawls..

Tuttifruity is right, you do need a good cover to go with the Kindle. Not only to stop it getting dusty - my wife leaves hers at the side of the bed, where all the 'dust bunnies' live. Any movement produces a draught and that can soon leave the kindle looking like an old man with thinning grey hair (how many shades ?). Yes, we should vac under the bed more often, but there are loads of storage boxes under there and it's heavy and any excuse...

We got a £10 Tesco one, made of stretchy Neoprene, like a scuba diver suit. It serves it's purpose but is not for those with arthritis, who may find it a bit difficult to peel off or put back on. Having said that, ours seems to slide on and off now, the neoprene has stiffened since she got it and it's sort of moulded to the shape. It's also protective of someone like me putting a slippered foot on it when I make the bed.

The point about battery life from Lnne is also a good one, and worth bearing in mind. My wife works as a home carer, she has a 'round' given to her by the office where she goes to each person for half an hour at a time, but there are often gaps and it's not worth her driving home to go back, so she parks up in a shopping centre or something, where there is some light, and reads her Kindle until the next call.

She can also play music through it, like an MP3 player, with some headphones plugged in. Because it connects to the PC so easily, I can transfer songs over too. It has it's own wifi web browser, but she prefers to use the PC properly when she's looking for her next book.

As for the Kindle Fire - are you really bothered about reading in colour? That seems to be the biggest update, adding a colour screen for when you're browsing. Reading needs to be plain black and white, for the contrast to prevent the eyes getting tired. Having said that, I recall early 'computer' screens being amber, or green, on black as well - the early space invaders machines used a black and white TV tube with coloured tape stuck over to make it look like a colour screen.

And apologies to Daxiemad for the hi-jack, I was only making comment on the hype of 50 shades. I can only hope that the lung exercise was as helpful to you as it was to Puffthemagicdragon

Hi, Daxiemad. Being a total book-worm, I never thought I'd like reading from a Kindle - how wrong I was! I have over 1500 books on there now, the vast majority of them were free. I read even more different subjects now than I did before and if I don't like a book, I can 'remove it from this device' with no problem (have great difficulty getting rid of paper-books!!). I have a 3g with keyboard, don't see the need for a colour screen because you can download a free Kindle app to your computer and read the books from there if they have any colour pictures in!

Kindle Touch - best thing I ever bought, covers for it are essential! Please don't be fooled into buying a cover from large stores,They are trashy and expensive.Try looking on ebay or similar, there are some great items there ten times better and half the price. I bought an excellent leather one for £7.99!

I got the old kindle for my birthday 2 years ago and love it. love that the battery lasts so long too I wasnt that impressed by the kindle touch - didnt seem to do much more than the old one i've got except for being touch screen but apparently the kindle fire is all singing and all dancing, it's more like a tablet than just an e-reader so it really depends what you want it for - if you just want it for reading then go for the basic one and save some money but if you want to be able to use it as a mini computer with a touch screen then hold out for the kindle fire. I totally agree with the others about the case. i was lucky enough to get a nice leather one with a built-in light at the same time as i got the kindle itself but i do know that my family paid nearly £50 just for the cover which is a third of the price of the kindle itself!!! so long as it protects the kindle from dust/water/knocks & drops there's no need to spend that sort of money but some sort of cover is necessary, i know 2 people who've had their's broken when it slipped off the arms of the sofa/chair and fell on carpeted floor but the screens still broken so they do seem to be pretty fragile and i dont think there's any insurance available for them (could be wrong).

best thing i find is to visit a shop and see what it feels like to hold in your hand. heavy or light? to hold.plus read reviews .hope this helps.
